Monarch – The King of Butterflies
Monarch butterflies qualify as one of the most beautiful and majestic on the planet; they are considered the “king” of the butterflies, hence the name “monarch”. Their habitat ranges from North America, south of Hudson Bay, all the way to most of South America (Wild Life Journal Junior). They are considered some of the best migraters on the planet as they often travel thousands of miles from their summer homes to their winter homes, sometimes producing and losing four generations in the process. The cycle from egg to adult is very fascinating and calculating process; the timing is so precise that it can add months to the life of the adult. The Monarch Butterfly is in a very dangerous situation as their habitat is slowly being destroyed due to Mother Nature and human intervention. The loss of these majestic creatures would be a tragedy indeed. Monarch butterflies utilize different a habitat in the warm months versus the cold months. In the spring, summer and early fall, they can be found wherever there are milkweeds. Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweeds and they 're always searching for them in fields, meadows and parks. Many people plant milkweeds in their gardens. Similarly, Monarchs cannot survive freezing temperatures, so they spend the winter months in the cool, high mountains of central Mexico, where it hibernates in oyamel fir trees, and woodlands in central and southern California, where it prefers eucalyptus trees.
