When the movements experienced violent backlash from government forces, the female protesters were in the greatest danger of all the participants. The abuses of female protesters had taken on very different forms than those of their male counterparts. Harassment and brutalization by the police, the mukhabarat, or secret police, and the army often had sexual connotations for women. Egyptian female protesters were subjected to strip-searches, in which pictures were taken while they were undressed. These government forces had also accused female activists of prostitution and forced them to undergo virginity testing. Many of those tortured publicized their treatment, such as Mona Eltahawy, the author of Headscarves and Hymens. As Eltahawy was protesting along with hundreds of thousands of other Egyptians, she was detained by the Egyptian military.
