Hero’s Journey Essay
Momotaro's story takes place in Japan during the Edo period which was from 1603 to 1867. In the story, Momotaro's family lives as part of the peasant class. This time period was marked by “the powerful southwestern tozama domains of Chōshū and Satsuma exerted the greatest pressure on the Tokugawa government and brought about the overthrow of the last shogun.” (Encyclopedia Brittanica) A shogun was a military ruler. The government structure was “required the domainal lords, or Daimyo, to maintain households in the Tokugawa administrative capital of Edo.”(Encyclopedia Brittanica) The story of Momotaro is a folktale, which is a characteristically anonymous, timeless, and placeless …show more content…
One example of a challenge is “you are a rude man to pass my field without asking permission first. If you leave all the cakes you have in your bag you may go; otherwise I will bite you till I kill you.” (Ozaki) Momotaro succeeds in this challenge by introducing himself to the dog. This is a challenge for Momotaro because the dog is threatening him. The greatest challenge or abyss for Momotaro is when they reached the island of the Devils this is the abyss because this is the problem Momotaro went to solve. The qualities that enable Momotaro to succeed include are his bravery to go fight the Devils on his own. Some flaws in Momotaro’s character as a hero include being too trusting. These flaws serve as an obstacle to Momotaro’s journey because when he took the devil home he could have escaped and killed him. Momotaro succeeds in realizing his final goal because he kills the devils and returns the treasure and saves the captive people.This return can be seen here: “The old couple’s joy was greater than ever, and the treasure Momotaro brought home with him enabled them to live in peace and plenty to the end of their days.”(Ozaki) The moral of this story is what comes around goes around comes around which is shown when what the Devils stole is returned. The punishment being death. The reason Momotaro went on this journey was because the band of Devils were holding people hostage and stealing treasure. In the process of the return Momotaro invaded the island, stole back the treasure and held the Chief of the Devil's hostage too. This return can be seen here when “The dog and the Pheasant carried home the plunder, and thus Momotaro returned triumphantly to his home, taking with him the devil chief as a captive.”(Ozaki) Therefore, Momotaro's return is physical and mental and includes a successful trip home and the realization that he has succeeded and is happy and fulfilled in his
