Coming from a Mexican family and being a female is a bit difficult. It is difficult when you have family that is waiting for you to “grow up” to become a mother. Some family members belief this is still a norm for a female to get married, have children, and stay home to take care of the family. Just because some of the women in my family became mothers at a young age, I did not want to become a mother, at least not yet. On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich, she wrote “Happily, though, my fears turn out to be entirely unwarranted: during a month of poverty and toil, no one recognizes my face or my name, which goes unnoticed and for the most part unuttered.…

For a while, I procrastinated about reading this book, but once I started reading, I didn’t stop until I was finished. The book was so vividly descriptive, that I could see the images in my mind. Are the so-called choices for women who want to become mothers really choices at all? In the documentary The Mommy Mystique: The Anxiety of Modern Motherhood, the women Judith Warner (author) speaks to, in her book, are middle and upper class who grew up in the 1970’s, the first generation to go to college and graduate school in percentages that match their counterparts. Women who grew up with feminist eloquence, if not part of that movement, they were accustomed to modern standards for women’s equality. Women who aspired to have careers.…

It has taken me quite a while to decide upon a major, but when I started looking into nursing, it was like everything just clicked. There have been many factors that led to this decision. The biggest one of all is my mother’s last pregnancy. Towards the end of her third trimester, she started having difficulties especially with her blood pressure. I remember being with her in the hospital and watching as a doctor and a couple of nurses fluttered in and out of her room.…

In the first episode of Parenthood, it is very evident that a normal family such as the Braverman’s can have just as many conflicts as any other family. The Braverman clan, comprised of an older couple, their four children, and their respective families, experience many trials throughout this first episode, which just goes to show that conflict is inevitable when you have that many people together. The first episode is a culmination of different conflicts that entail things less serious such as Crosby, Sarah’s younger brother, sleeping with his girlfriend Katie, who has a different man’s sperm in their refrigerator to more serious conflict where Kristina and Adam find out their son is diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. The scene that I am…

It is important that those middle-class women whose voices are more likely to be heard in the debate over redefinition of the family not create a new hegemonic narrative of motherhood in which there are good nonmarital mothers who are middle-class, white and well-educated, and bad nonmarital mothers, who are poor, black, uneducated and possibly drug addicted or HIV-positive. Such divisions along lines of class and race would be disastrous. What must happen instead is that women must seek commonalties that will support the development of coalitions between women of different races and classes. Statistics clearly have shown that many people no longer live in the traditional nuclear family and the number of births to unmarried women has risen among all races. Despite these statistics, the fact remains that in the minds of much of white America, the face of single motherhood and of mothers on welfare, like the face of crime, is black.…

I will be interpreting the article Mother-Child Narratives and the Kingdom of God: Authorial Use of Typology as an Interpretive Device in Samuel-Kings by Christopher Jero. In his article Jero uses three narratives, The Hannah Narrative, Solomons Judgement and the Elisha and the Shunnamite Woman to show how these mother child narratives reveal the history of Samuel-Kings. The Hannah narrative details a woman who longs for a son further representing Israel’s longing for a king. Solomon’s judgement tells the story of two woman arguing over who the baby belongs to but symbolizes the divided kingdom. Finally in Elisha and the Shunnamite Woman, God promises a woman a son but the son dies and is later reborn this alludes to the fall of David’s kingdom.…
