Mommie Dearest Essay

Improved Essays
Constantly cleaning everything in sight, and scrubbing your body clean till you start to bleed is a sign of a physiological disorder that can and should be diagnosed before it’s too late. People handle messes and disorganization in different ways, some could care less, and on the other hand, some get completely disoriented and have to clean everything in sight. Obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD is more than just cleaning; it has to do with your brain constantly performing acts unintentionally (Rathus, 2010). Obsessive-compulsive disorder can affect people’s attitudes in negative ways, like in the 1981 film Mommie Dearest, directed by Frank Perry, which accurately portrays how OCD can ruin a family and career.

Someone who has obsessive-compulsive disorder gets thoughts that are unwanted that cause them to do repetitive behaviors (Rathus, 2010). For example, people with OCD have the obsession to clean everything spotless, like Joan Crawford when she had to clean under a plant that would be easily forgotten by anyone else. One night in the Crawford household when the children were still young, Joan walked into the bedroom where Christina was sleeping to hang a dress and found a wire hanger, a long with a “messy bathroom”. Instantly, Joan snapped and woke-up her sleeping daughter, beat her with the wire hanger, and yelled at her to clean the bathroom floor. Christina insisted she cleaned it that day and said “It isn’t messy, Mommie. Please stop.” Nevertheless, Joan persisted and made Christina re-clean the bathroom in the middle of he night, after continuously abusing her daughter. People who have obsessive-compulsive disorder can be very anxious and stressed and when their urges begin it can make them uneasy. Surely, there is no excuse to abuse your own child, but Joan didn’t see herself doing anything wrong, because it was Christina who brought a wire hanger in her house and didn’t clean the bathroom up to par. Allowing unpleasant thoughts in your head while having OCD can be harmful to you and anyone around

One well-known example to describe OCD is the obsession of feeling dirty and always believing that one’s self is contaminated, and the compulsion would be to wash one’s hands constantly to get rid of the obsession. According to the Cognitive approach for OCD, the thoughts keep reoccurring because Julie is unable to build up her self worth. When Julie starts thinking she is doing something unsatisfactory, the first thing she does is to blame herself. Finally there is the Biological model, which states that OCD can be inherited. In this case, Julie may have inherited her OCD from her grandfather who had paranoia and a tendency to repeatedly wash his hands. Personally, I would say the Julie's OCD is mainly being effected by Behavioral approach and the Biological approach.…

Disease trivialization has three main components: oversimplification of symptoms, skepticism of the severity, and levity (Pavelko, 2015). The first facet of disease trivialization, the oversimplification of symptoms, is easily applicable to OCD. For example, few people outside of the medical community are aware that OCD has many sub-types. However, due to media coverage focusing heavily on compulsive OCD over purely obsessive OCD many people only associate the disorder with organizing or hand-washing (Allen, 2013). Unfortunately, this disparity in knowledge excludes many of the subtypes in OCD and in turn excludes many of the symptoms that are specific to these subtypes.…

This could be the case because not everyone watching this movie has the knowledge about obsessive-compulsion disorder or even mental illness therefore leaving out treatments and some symptoms about this disorder would not have much effect on the entire plot of the movie. In the media, mental illness can be overlooked and even portrayed incorrectly. I believe that this movie showed the obvious signs of the OCD that most of the population knows about, like the germs. However, not all OCD symptoms include germs but could be anything the individual is scared of or has some sort of attachment towards.…

Reflection When listening to the podcast of the interview of David Adam, I could finally understand how people who have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) think and act. I have never met or spoken to someone with OCD so I personally did not know the thought process of those diagnosed with the disorder. One anecdote Adam speaks of that illustrates the irrational thoughts people with OCD have was when he scraped his heel in Manchester.…

Some symptoms include fear of contamination, need for symmetry and order, feeling you can keep others safe by performing certain rituals, doubts that you locked the door or turned off the stove, and worrying about throwing out things with little or no value. These feelings can lead to certain behaviors such as excessive hand washing, constant rearranging this to get it right, checking the same things over and over again, and hoarding. OCD can also lead to other anxiety disorders and even major depression. If you have a close relationship with someone who has OCD, be patient. Those with OCD also tend to have trouble with maintaining healthy relationships and careers.…

Melvin Udall is a middle aged man, in his forties or fifties who is part of a higher socioeconomic class, due to his successful career as a stay at home writer. He lives in an upscale New York apartment and during his free time enjoys playing the piano. Melvin expresses prejudicial attitudes, including anti-Semitism, racism, and heterosexism. He made several of these comments, claiming “assault and battery and your black,” to his neighbor’s black friend, “there’s Jews at my table,” along with another stereotypical comment about their “big noses,” and he even introduced his neighbor as “Simon the fag,” a homophobic slur. He gives little background information, except for saying that his dad used to hit him as a kid if he ever made a mistake while playing the piano, which may explain his behavior.…

(Toates, 2010, p34). Also, there is a history of OCD in John’s family, because some individuals are genetically prone to mental illnesses, (Toates, 210, p18). Side effects ceased the use of medication. A psychological intervention is the gradual exposure to the anxiety-evoking thoughts, and at the same time, John is encouraged to decrease the time spent on hands washing gradually, and then urged to abstain from performing his ritual (Toates, 2010, p23). In one study, a lowering of metabolic activities in the specific OCD regions of the brain was found with all previous treatments, (Baxter et al., 1992, cited in Toates, 2010, p35), to confirm the psychological and biological…
