“ But mama!!” I complained. Momma was my idol, and sometimes my least favorite person. Right now, all I wanted to do is put her in my shoes and see how she felt. My best friend Ava and I had been planning to watch Elizabeth, Ava’s pig, give birth. She had been pregnant for nine months now, and Ava told me at school that she had overheard her ma and pa discussing the delivery. “ I promised Ava I would be there. She even said I could keep one.” I pleaded on my knees, tears swelling up in my eyes. “ Fine. You win this time Isabelle, but next time yo’ little puppy dog eyes ain’t gonna save yo’ tushie. Make sho’ you’re back by supper time, darlin’. If not, you know what Papa’ll do to ya’” Mama scolded. Mama and Papa said they were bad people and discriminated against people of color “ The pleasures all mine, dear.” Mr. Crosby didn’t sound like the kind of man who was all sweet and warm inside. Something was off about him. Even after we had settled into our one room Mama, Papa, and I would all share, Mr. Crosby was still talking. Finally, before supper was being served, he had left. He said he going to be back again tomorrow to continue talking about his restrictions for sharecropping. After supper, Ava and I washed up Oinkers and her piglet, as well as ourselves before calling it a night. The next day, after I awoke, everyone had already gotten up and was eating breakfast. While I was about to sit down next to Ava, I heard the doorbell ring. Mrs. Sull rose from her chair and went to the door. Mrs. Sull welcomed Mr. Crosby in and offered him a biscuit. He refused it and said that he had already eaten. When Papa was finished eating he joined Mrs. Sull and Mr. Crosby’s conversation. Minutes later, we heard yelling and arguing.
