Momentum Physical Therapy Observation Report

Improved Essays
By getting involved in preceptorships in different clinical settings this semester, it has enhanced our education and allowed us to see how influential physical therapy can be for patients and their families. In order to supplement the education received in class and literature available, we had the opportunity to observe an outpatient physical therapy clinic at Momentum Physical Therapy. At this specific location, care is given from five physical therapists, which provided us the unique opportunity to walk around and observe different treatment styles. The primary goal of patient care at Momentum is to restore muscle and joint function along with increase mobility. Our first patient was a middle-aged woman with complaints of chronic cervical

PT 826 Reading Assignment The information given in the article by Lau, Chiu, & Lam (2010) about using thoracic manipulation for the treatment of neck pain was very new to me. There were several instances in the past where I treated patients with neck pain by giving mobilizations techniques and modalities in and around cervical area. This article was a convincing one which helped me to understand the concept of biomechanical and etiological relationship between cervical and thoracic structures and how this knowledge can be capitalized by effectively using thoracic mobilization in patients suffering from chronic mechanical neck pain.…

To regain some of her mobility, she underwent daily physical therapy. At her age and in her condition, it was evident that she was unable to engage in activities requiring endurance or excessive strength. The patient still needed to be able to move short distances with assistance, such as moving from the bed to a nearby chair. APA Vision Summary

Part of the vision is the concept of physical therapists moving more into the community which is also part of social responsibility as one of APTA’s core values (APTA, 2012). To build on this vision, physical therapists need to move past looking at the shoulder or knee injury from the traditional medical model of treating a patient, and more toward how it is impacting their daily movement and functioning at home, school, work or recreation (Hayhurst, 2014). The physical therapists in the school system have already moved away from this medical model given the environment in which we work. However, the school staff relies on therapists for medical and clinical expertise. The only interaction with physicians is to sign a plan of care if the individual therapist is billing Medicaid for a student’s therapy services which are carried out through a fax…

I want to thank you for the opportunity to be able to apply for the Physical Therapist's Assistant Program (PTA) at Whatcom Community College. My passion for Physical Therapy began in high school while working at my first job, which was fortunately in a Physical Therapist office. At this job, my aide duties included assisting patients through exercises and setting up patients on modalities. Being a student athlete, this job opportunity made me realize the importance of physical therapy due to sports injuries of team members and classmates. The abundance of these injuries showed that physical therapy and sports rehab injury prevention is a priority among young athletes.…

Organizational Assessment Because this is an ongoing pilot study, it is my recommendation that staff education be implemented in our rehabilitation unit. I am currently working in the intensive care unit, where most patients are either sedated or on a ventilator. When they improve, the patients are transferred to the medical floors or a rehabilitation unit. I do feel that this will be an excellent study for the rehabilitation unit because it is the next stage of recovery before being discharged to an extended care facility or home.…

Overall, resources for physical therapists at Wesley Place are limited but ultimately the PT deliver quality care with what they have. In conclusion, our field experience has taught us the importance of intensive interdisciplinary care required for a patient at a SNF. We have come to understand that strong communication among therapy services and other healthcare providers is key for quality patient outcomes. Although high employment turnover rates, reimbursement issues, and a shortage of resources are common in SNF’s, the therapists at Wesley Place enjoy working with their patients and patients are in turn highly satisfied with the care and treatment…

I’ve seen my fair share of injuries having been in sports my whole life. From softball and soccer in high school to then competing in collegiate waterskiing, it wasn’t until a waterskiing accident where I found muscle therapy: a deviation from massage and chiropractic therapy. In my own words, it’s as if a physical therapist, chiropractor, and a massage therapist combined their practice a named it muscle therapy. The injury I sustained was a sprained meniscus, a thoracic strain, and thoracic sprain from a fall off a waterski ramp. I was originally referred to a physical therapist but I stopped going after two weeks.…
