The energy charges relate to the raw cost of energy which is traded in the national electricity market. This portion of the charges is negotiable and the consumer can enter into a contract with the retailer of their choice.
The contracted energy prices are multiplied by distribution and transmission loss factors to arrive at the final prices. The loss factors relate to the energy losses that take place during the transmission and distribution of electricity. Transmission losses vary by geographic location and distribution losses vary according to the voltage at which the supply is taken. The electricity tariff is the pricing structure charged by the electricity retailer to the customer. This has a big influence on how your electricity prices are calculated. Your electricity tariff includes the “fixed charge” for supplying electricity to your business, and the “variable charge” for the amount of electricity you use.

The retailers are obliged to source specified quantities of electricity from renewable sources and there is a cost associated with this. All retailers raise these charges.
The Large Scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET) applies to generation by larger renewable energy schemes such as wind farms, geothermal and commercial solar.
The Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) applies to small schemes such as domestic solar installations and small wind turbines. Some retailers fix these charges at the time of contracting and others revise them from time to time.
The prices of LRET and SRES certificates are dictated by market forces and vary by retailer. Prices for SRES certificates are stable but LRET certificate prices have increased significantly in recent time owing to the shortage of certificates. This is due to inadequate new investment into renewables projects.
