Earlier on I said there were rainbow seas. The Great Tree, the biggest tree on the planet, divides the rainbow seas. There are 7 seas, and each one has its own color, and its own land. Each sea tastes like a different fruit, for

The incident in which Ayah's children are taken away is one of the more intriguing parts of the story. I must agree with the initial response, this certainly seemed to me that Ayah was tricked into signing her children over. The entire story recounts Ayah's difficult life, which all seems to stem from interactions from white authority figures, in this case the dubious doctors. Perhaps this is not the intention but her ordeal with the doctors is very renin of the experience Native American had with Columbus and the settlers of Jamestown. She is relating the the decide of the white doctors to the historical deceit of the white settlers.…

In Lose Your Mother by Saidya Hartman, Hartman gives the reader a unique perspective on the institution of slavery than is often examined. This work begins to question our previous knowledge of the slave trade and forces us to look at the story from a perspective that as a society we may not want to acknowledge. Her work demands a deeper understanding of the institution of slavery be known and no longer allows society to perpetuate the misunderstandings of slavery and Africa that we have been perpetuating since the trade started. Often we are taught slavery from a Western perspective; we discuss how America prospered from the industry and how devastating the institution treated the individuals it captured.…

Welfare Essay Have you ever felt really confident about something you did in life, and then just have it crushed by somebody else’s opinion of you. Some may not realize that people do try to improve the situation that they are in, but sometimes it does not work out. Larkin Warren, the author of “I Was a Welfare Mother” wanted to inform people that it is not fair to judge people, especially if you do not know what they are going through. It can be hard in the real world as you grow up; you are not a little kid anymore that likes to play with barbie dolls or mini racecars. You become an adult with more responsibilities such as paying bills, rent, a car, a family of your own, etc.…

Abraham in Mama Might Be Better Off Dead humanizes the inequalities in quality and health care access that exists between the rich and the poor, through the stories of the Banes family, Mrs. Jackson, and Tommy. Abraham exposes the flaws in our healthcare system; through the experiences of one Chicago family we can see that it all comes down to money equals health. With that in mind, the book paints a ground up picture of how the health care fails to take care of those in most need. Abraham’s central message is “Not only do the poor get sicker but the sicker get poor” (39). With the statement above, Abraham is talking about the vicious cycle that the poor have to live with.…

Borrowing the genre of melodrama, Almodóvar’s award-winning film, All About My Mother (1999), features transgender and post-queer study of sexuality. Apart from presenting two pre-op transgenders, the film renders a variety of “abnormal” intimate relationships, including the protagonist, Manuela’s family without a father, Huma’s ultimately failed lesbian relationship with Nina, and the family formed at the end of the film, constituted by Manuela, Rosa’s baby, and queer girlfriends. These unusual forms of intimacy disturb the hereto-sexist institutions, e.g. marriage and family. Portraying gender, sexuality, and identity as unfixed, the film mocks the conventional perception by interweaving the theatrical performance with the real life: On the one hand, the fixity and stereotype of femininity and masculinity are fostered by cinematic representations, exemplified by Hollywood productions; On the other hand, the reference to…
