Molybdenum is ancient element and known since the 3rd century BC. This element was known as "molybdaena" at that ancient time which means graphite and galena and was confused with (naturally occurring) molybdenite. In the 17th century scientists discovered that molybdaena did not contain lead. It is well known that Molybdenum cannot be found as native element and can be obtained from the ore of molybdenite (MoS2). This element can be found and obtained from the ores Wulfenite (PbMoO4) and Powellite (Ca(MoW)O4). By the beginning of the 20th century scientists succeeded to produce pure molybdenum for the first time by reducing molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) with hydrogen gas.
