December 16th, 2016 The Moltmann and Minjung Response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis Moltmann’s and Minjung’s Christology are closely related in that the central theme of hope permeates their philosophies. Moltmann’s Christology emphasizes more of a messianic Christology were death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul are essential to liberating those who are currently oppressed or suffering. In this case, the concept of hope is closely related to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. The term Minjung itself means “mass of people.” This Christology was meant to not stay stationary within the doctrines of the Church or solely belong to the rich and elite of Asian society. Rather, Minjung Christology looked to reflect the authenticity of the people, their past circumstances, their understandings of struggle, as well as their ambitions and hope. This can be applied to the Syrian Refugee Crisis. Minjung Christology would respond to this international humanitarian crisis by saying that the Kingdom of God in which the poor are sanctified, the helpless freed and all people are saved from death for salvation is the fulfillment of liberation for which Jesus lived, died and rose again. In other words, Jesus lives with and for the common people, which includes these Syrian refugees. The Minjung image of Christ did not come to fulfill God’s Will like in Moltmann’s Christology but instead, he is ever present in their lives ensuring that their immediate needs are met. For this reason, Minjung belief is that Jesus is the principle of creation and ergo Christ is anything that betters creation and improves life. Minjung Christology would say this is the present Christ at work trying to aid the Syrian refugees via through the Pope. There are plenty of sources in the New Testament of the Bible that support this view of the omnipresent Christ in Minjung Christology. Specifically, the Gospel of Mark highlights Jesus’ association with the common people. Case in point, Mark 11: 5 reads, “The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.” This Scripture reveals that through maintaining faith and hope in Jesus Christ one’s issues will be corrected and fixed in due time. Minjung Christology stresses that Christ hears your problems and is working to guide you head-on to resolve them. Christ is not distant but rather alongside you helping you deal with your dilemmas.
