In order to reduce or prevent indoor air quality problems with mold and mildew it is imperative to identify and eliminate sources of moisture. Areas of mold germination and growth at the library should be sought out, assessed, and appropriately removed to decrease the negative health effects of mold contamination. Effective cleaning techniques should be used to remove mold off hard surfaces with appropriate sanitation products and methods for cleanup. Recommendations regarding mold remediation should be followed by the library management. They should properly protect themselves from harm by wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment, including N-95 respirators that fit properly, long gloves that extend to the middle of the forearm (for heavy duty cleaning natural rubber, neoprene, nitrile, polyurethane or PVC gloves are recommended), and goggles without ventilation holes. The EPA recommends that mold should be washed off of hard surfaces with detergent and water, and allowed to dry completely. Absorbent or porous materials, including ceiling tiles, upholstered furniture, carpets, rugs, as well as books, cardboard, and drapes with moldy residues that are difficult to completely clean should be properly disposed of. Exposure to indoor airborne concentrations of mold, or mold spores is avoidable and preventable with adequate moisture control. Excessive water or moisture should be identified and removed. Although the library had acceptable housekeeping sanitation schedules that provided a generally clean environment for patrons and staff, I felt that more frequent cleaning and maintenance could prevent indoor mold
