Mold and bacteria grow quickly in a wet and damp area after a water leak of flooding. Mold becomes particularly threatening to those with allergies, asthma, or other breathing problems. However, mold can also become a problem for people without health issues. Symptoms are flu-like and include sore throats, wheezing, aches and pains, and fatigue. This is the importance of mold testing after a water leak or flooding.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states, "During a flood cleanup, the indoor air quality in your home or office may appear to be the least of your problems. However, failure to remove contaminated materials and to reduce moisture and humidity can present serious long-term health risks." They state that water stagnation and damp materials are a breeding place for mold, viruses, and bacteria. This causes a disease risk, ignites allergic reactions, and create more damage to materials.
