When solving for the percent of acetic acid present in vinegar the end result of 3.57% was not far off from the standard 4%. The small error could be a result of error in experiment or an actual failure of the acid to meet the federal standard. An example of error in experimentation is while the solution is titrated completely, the flask being swirled is removed from underneath the buret and a drop or two of NaOH can sneak out before the valve is closed. Those few missed drops as well as excess NaOH in titration can affect the accuracy of the results. Human error is almost always a factor for example when measuring any values without digital assistance leaves room for the naked eye to make mistakes. As far as the second part of the experiment was, the 0.0025% deviation indicates that the titration was accurate. The ending molar mass (202.59 g/mol) of the mystery acid points to two possible suspects. The first being Cesium Diuranate, and the second Sodium Diuranate. Without the information it wasn’t possible to determine which one it would be. There is also a chance that the results had small deviation (accurate) but were not precise. For example if both titrations had error due to the mass of the samples being incorrect. There was also a potential error during the second titration. While adding the indicator to the acid solution the tip came in

The analytic balances may not always be “zeroed”: some of the balances kept fluctuating between -.05 to 0.5, which would affect the accuracy of the weight of the sample. A prominent issue that occurred throughout the lab was air bubbles present in the columns. If the column of resin was not perfectly uniformed, the experiment must restart, or else the ion-exchange chromatography will not perform accurately. Another issue was the titration of the inorganic salt solution. If the solution turned into a bold pink/purple, then too much NaOH was added, and the true number of moles and weight of the sample cannot be determined.…

One thing that definitely went wrong in the lab was that we had to round about two of our measurements and the reason being was that they were exact. To exemplify, when we were reading the volume for the finishing measurement of the base for trial three, we got exactly 45.00 mL. The only problem was that, we had didn’t really have the two significant decimal numbers. Hence, we rounded our volume to 45.01 mL. Also, we got exactly 23.00 mL for our finishing volume of the acid for trial three. Therefore, once again we rounded it to 23.02mL in order to get at least two significant decimal numbers.…

During the phase and process of the bacterial unknown project, vast amounts of test were performed in order to determine an unknown species of bacteria. Within the many procedures of identifying the unknown bacteria, I was first given a tube with the unknown bacteria, from which later on I started subcultures by streaking bacteria from the original tube onto a tryptic soy agar (TSA) slant. Throughout the process of identifying the unknown, new subcultures were produced in order to use the newest bacteria to conduct the tests. Thus, this process allowed the unknown bacteria to grow and maintain. Before a series of test were conducted, first a gram stain test was performed in order to determine the unknown’s gram reaction and its cell morphology.…

Abstract For this experiment the amount of zinc in vitamin water had to be determined. To do this, three methods were applied. The first was by a calibration plot method, where zinc standards were prepared and from the absorbance of those standards a calibration curve was plotted, which in turn was used to determine the amount of zinc in vitamin water. The second method was standard addition.…

Observed/theoretical X 100 1.476 g/3.08 g X 100=47.9% Discussion of Results: There was too much error introduced into the experiment to be able to indicate exactly which product was obtained through the experiment. I believe the results were supposed to include the product being erythro-2,3-dibromo-3-phenypropanoic acid and the mechanism that took place in the experiment was in fact the bromonium ion mechanism. My group’s percent error was 47.9% which is extremely low. This low percent error was gained from the lack of mass of the product obtained after vacuum filtration.…

Abstract: The objective of this experiment was to synthesize aspirin from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. The general theory behind this experiment was to study the synthesis of a drug from organic materials. During the experiment, esterification had occurred between reactants salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. Then, phosphoric acid would catalyze the reaction and water would be added to decompose the remaining acetic anhydride. Through the process of filtration, aspirin crystals were collected and separate from the liquid acetic acid-water solution.…

Purpose Titration is a technique where an unknown solution’s concentration is determined with a solution of a known concentration. In this case, the known solution, NaOH, is dripped into the unknown, unknown #2, with a burette. The NaOH is dripped until the reaction is complete, while measuring the pH per amount of base added. Using the data collected, the equivalence point can be found and the concentration can be calculated. Then the KA can be found at specific points (20%, 40%, etc).…

The low percent error of 0.377% is indicative of the accuracy of this experiment. Possible sources of error include the unknown carbonate absorbing water during the heating and cooling process. There also may have been human error when the solid contents when transferred to the filter paper because perhaps not all of the contents were completely transferred.
