Module 7: A Short Story

Great Essays
Once upon a time, there were three human sisters. Their names were Maia, Phoebe, and Megan.
They lived in a great swirling forest, in a tiny cottage with only two rooms. Those two rooms were all they needed, for they only needed tools for when they were out, books and such, and a place to sleep.
Phoebe was some few weeks past her thirteenth birthday, and animals loved her, as she loved them. She took her spare time to paint lustrous landscapes and fantastical storybook imagery. Her hope was to one day finish a book of paintings, all moments from living in the forest.
Megan was sixteen and lived for mere enjoyment, for one of her dreams was to meet one of the knights and princes who passed through the forest on galloping steeds, and fall in love with him. She was energetic and endearing. She

The bird king has been taken, and agony sweeps the woods.”
Phoebe reappeared with the cloaks. She buttoned hers, and gave Maia and Megan theirs.
“If the bird king truly is gone, do you know who would take him?” asked Megan of her animal loving sister.
Phoebe didn’t answer, instead she swung open the door to the outside, and laced up her boots. “This way,” she said.
They marched through the forest to a circle of stones, and Phoebe sat down on one.
“This, so I’ve been told, is the bird meeting circle. I also know that at this time, it is more common for the birds of the woods to be here. Notice, sisters, the absence of birds of any kind. They are nowhere to be seen, and so we must assume that they are in chaos. It is unlike birds to cancel a meeting for anything.”
The girls looked around the stone slabs. There were bird droppings on one of the stones, and footprints on another.
“These are human footprints,” said Megan, and Maia came over to investigate.
“It’s a large size...a knight? From Skovregn?”
The two older sisters tiptoed a bit further into the

Performing a number of experiments in an attempt to communicate with the Bigfoot, I established what is known as a “feeding station.” It is a location where the researcher will place gifts and food, in hopes the Bigfoot will take one or both, and reciprocate by leaving a gift. The feeding station I established was located in what looked to be a “day shelter.” I had located it a few weeks earlier while investigating the area.…

A heavy sigh echoed though the small dank space, followed by a low humorless laugh. Oliver carefully shifted his precarious footing in the soft muck beneath the dark murky water, grimacing as the mud oozed deeper into his boots. He raised his eyes toward the circle of dim light a mere five feet beyond his reach. His eyes lowered to study the wall of algae covered green stones that lined the well shaft…well that had lined most of the shaft. An angry scar of exposed red clay marred a large portion of the wall above where he had attempted to climb out nearly a half hour earlier, the missing stones lost somewhere in the ice cold water below.…

Cruising stones, sliding rocks, moving stones, and moving rocks are a topographical marvel where rocks move and write long tracks along a smooth valley floor without human or creature intercession. Stones with unpleasant bottoms leave straight striated tracks while those with smooth bottoms have a tendency to meander. Stones once in a while turn over, presenting another edge to the ground and leaving an alternate track in the stone's wake. Trails contrast in both heading and length. Rocks that begin beside one another may travel parallel for a period, before one unexpectedly alters course to one side, right, or even back to the heading from which it came.…

Yet, we still see people feed animals that are wild. As with all arguments, there are two sides to this one. Not to feed the birds, and to feed the birds.…
