The Civil War at the time seemed like a battle that had a clear outcome. The North had so many more resources compared to the South, but that didn't stop them. Paragraph 5 contributes to the development of the text by showing how even with all of the problems the confederates had, they were still able to put up a good fight, and find other solutions to their problems. The South had less weapons, less people and no control over gunpowder shipments in the navy, but replaced a lack of these things with resourceful solutions.
One of the many things the South lacked was a large population. Compared to the North's 21 million, the South had a measly 9 million, 2.5 million of which were slaves (Paragraph 2, Sentences 1-2). Having a larger population helped because they would have access to a larger pool of resources, however the huge population of slaves made up for it as they were able to produce a sustainable amount of food.
