To begin, on September 28, I was given the opportunity to assess a kindergarten student. Before I presented the four assessments, my student and I got to know each other well. I told her some background information about me and she did the same in return. She told me her name is Ally. She is a five year old. Her birthday is October 14. She also stated she liked the color blue along with arts and crafts. Letter identification, phonemic awareness, sentence dictation and concepts of print were the four assessments given. The reason for assessing is to determine the child’s level in literacy. These assessments assess the students ability in identifying letters, indicating vital parts of a book, transferring a sentence to paper from memory, segmenting, deleting, blending, rhyming and phonemic isolation. …show more content…
This assessment assesses the child’s knowledge about letters. Students are also allowed to give the correlating sound or word if they cannot say the letter’s name. This is different from other letter recognition assessments because teachers can see what all a students knows about a letter versus them saying that letter’s name. She scored a 54/54. She recognized all letters (upper and lowercase) with no hesitation. She took no more than 2 and a half minutes to identify all the letters in the chart. Due to the rapid speed of her identifying the letters, I noticed at times she would say the next letter on accident. She knew all of the letters, she just tended to get ahead of herself at certain points. After observing this three times, I told her to take a deep breath and slow down since it was not a timed assessment. She eventually developed a pace for herself and said all the letters with a patterned
