Module 3: Applying Coping Behavior Concepts

The most important concept in module 3 is Coping Behavior because it taught me that: 1) you can cope with a behavior because it is not far from your preferred style and 2) it is more than likely harder to cope with a behavior because you have moved further away from your preferred style. Coping can produce negative or positive behavior and will impact your work positively or negatively. Coping helps you process certain situations that may be more stressful than normal, but it depends on if you are an adaptor or an innovator which will determine a successful or unsuccessful outcome. Both adaptors and innovators will, at some point, have issues with coping. As an adaptor, I do not cope well in environments that may go from a minimum change to …show more content…
For example, SSgt John Smith (innovator) is in an environment where he was required to go to group meetings and follow already established regulations. SSgt Smith is unable to free think and successfully contribute to this group which begins to take a toll on him. I discuss with the SSgt Smith the multiple ways he could contribute to the group while still being able to use his preferred style. We would discuss that, although, there are regulations already established, we can find ways that he could contribute to the group by enhancing regulations or creating and discussing his ideas with the group. This gives SSgt Smith the ability to manage and maintain his relationships within the group. I want to be able to help subordinates deal with situations outside of their preferred style to avoid motivational decline and increases in stress because this could not only disrupt my subordinates’ behavior but also the groups’ behavior due to differences. As an effective leader, I want SSgt Smith to be able to use his preferred style without him losing his motivation and decreasing his well-being and impacting the group. Although, I want SSgt Smith to find different ways to incorporate his preferred style, he, also, needs to find ways to work without
