Modesty is the ever evolving perception of correct social behavior and, when mentioned, usually refers to one’s choice in dress. Socially acceptable presentation of one’s self varies between geographical location, religious standards, generation inheritance, social status, and between genders. Currently, the United States is undergoing an equality movement between race, social status, and gender expectations and is surrounded by immense controversy. One of these hot button transition topics regards what a female is supposed to be in this world.

Proceeding this, we see greater unrest among the female population while they challenge their role in the political world. After years of petitioning and touring the states rousing unrest, it came to November 14, 1917, “The Night of Terror,” to turn the tables. Referred to as a night, but in truth it spanned two weeks of torture and abuse against the protesting women. This information surfaced a little after the next change in female roles in the late 1900’s. Women were freeing themselves from various gender standards imposed upon them by men, to them, this included their stifling chastity. They had already started challenging sexuality with shorter dresses and daring hair styles, now in America’s Golden Age, 1950s, they opened their realm to party life with more provocative dances to swing music even more boundary pushing dresses that were hard pressed to touch the knee. Female swimsuits also underwent revision to more closely resemble today’s one pieces removing the extra leg covering and shortening included skirts, two piece swimsuits also appeared around this time. And so female modesty continued to let boundaries fall and women embraced
