Since the 16th century, modesty has been frequently used to describe mild-mannered people. Having come from Latin roots, the word had a specific meaning which seemed to portray an abundance of positivity. In addition, modesty was seen as an admirable trait by many European citizens. For example, in 16th century France modesty “both pleases and flatters a lover.” However its definition is now condemned to simply describe how one carries his or her self. This is due to the simple fact that both Democrats, and Republicans must agree to disagree in order to ensure the longevity and continued success of our nation. Our representatives must remain tolerant of each other, which does in fact intermingle with the term “modest.” While their opinions are usually different, they act professionally towards each other because that is what United States citizens expect of those who run our country and create laws. If this was not the case, and politicians constantly voiced their own opinions, modesty would be thrown out of the picture because of the inability to compromise.
