According to our textbook the Modernization theory says that low-income countries remain so because there is resistance to change in the areas of culture and attitudes about employment.(Little et al.,( 2014) Only by changing these beliefs and developing a more industrialized economy can they become a wealthier more independent nation. According to some this theory has flaws because for example some countries such as those in Latin America which are rich in natural resources have been unable to turn this wealth of resources into economic success. (Dunn, 2013) Dependency theory says that developed nations often make under development nations dependent on aide from foreign government by A) giving those countries loans that they must pay back with interest and B) exploiting their natural resources without developing any other means of support. For example: many say that El Salvador has become dependent on aide especially after President Obama passed a $277 million dollar compact with El Salvador in 2013 despite evidence that since the last aide package El Salvador has become poorer and more corrupt. While the dependency theory has some merit and we should teach a country to take care of their citizens, how could we just stand by and watch innocent people die of starvation? Moreover, we still have an obligation to help our neighbors in need. Furthermore, in my opinion the modernization theory does not hold true most countries welcome change when that change will bring jobs and independence. Finally, while globalization has some drawbacks of these three theories clearly to this writer it reigns supreme.
