F. Scott Fitzgerald was the author of the novel, The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald is considered to be a well-known American novelist. Many of Fitzgerald’s works were produced around the Jazz Age, The Great Gatsby being one of them. The genre of this novel is fiction, however some may consider it a Modernist novel too. This novel takes place in Long Island and New York City in the summer of 1922. These two locations and the time period are key to the novel, due to the uprising Jazz Age time period. My reason for choosing this novel is because it seemed like an enthralling read.

The protagonist of this novel is Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is a very wealthy man who lives in a massive mansion in West Egg. Although Jay Gatsby is perceived as a very mysterious man, he manages to throw huge parties. Daisy Buchanan is the woman who Gatsby is deeply in love with. Tom Buchanan is Daisy’s husband. Tom is described as an arrogant, abusive, and wealthy man.
The novel begins with Nick Carraway renting a small house in West Egg of Long Island, which is inhabited by Jay Gatsby too. West Egg is a district for the new rich. It is portrayed as wealthy looking, but highly unfashionable. Nick’s next door neighbor happens to be Jay Gatsby. When Nick first moves to West Egg, he goes to visit his long-lost cousin, Daisy, and her husband, Tom. There they all have dinner together, and Nick is introduced to Jordan Baker, one of Daisy’s friends. Although early to each others encountering, Jordan lets Nick in on Tom’s secret love life. She tells him that the lover is Myrtle Wilson, a woman who lives in a dumping site between West Egg and New York City. Later in the novel, Nick accompanies Tom to a secret party in Tom’s apartment. I think overall it had an amazing plot, and the characters were all well-developed. The author allowed us to see the characters through the bold actions that were taken place. Lastly, I loved the moral behind the story. The story allowed us to see that money can not buy you happiness. I would definitely rate this novel as one of my
