Modern Times By Charlie Chaplin: Movie Analysis

The Industrial Revolution changed the European economy from an agricultural economy to an industrial one. England was the center of the Industrial Revolution, and from England, it was spread to other European countries. This shift in economy happened gradually, and its peak was in the nineteenth century. The Industrial Revolution happened as a result of the rebuilding of London, the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment Movement, and it restructured the mold of living in England. There was an emerging commercial class at that time in Europe in general and in England in particular, and its endeavors helped so much in the Industrial Revolution. It was a time of equality and many people suffered from poverty, in addition to the injuries people suffered from while working. This point is shown in the scene where Charles Chaplin goes mad during his work in the factory. Since it was a time of modernism and industry, many factories were established and the reliance on machines increased and as a result, factories owners started competing against each other in order to grow their business without taking into consideration the poor condition of laborers and without paying them extra money for their extra hours. In the film Modern Times there is an example on how laborers were enslaved by factory owners. The owner decided to try a new machine discovery that built in order to decrease the lunch time as much as possible as Charles Chaplin was ordered by his to boss to try the new machine. In this scene we see Chaplin as an experimental rat. This example give us a sense of how laborers were oppressed and denied their
