You have to remember that not only will there be good news but also bad news as a part of the work day. One minute you may be delivering a litter of puppies while the next you may be delivering the bad news to pet owners that they will have to say their final “goodbyes” to their furry and loved companion. Also, working with animals means that you’re also working with poop and other not-so-nice bodily fluids. Some of the animals will be sick, recovering from surgery, or in quarantine. When these unfortunate conditions occur, the animal is sometimes not in control and needs some help keeping areas sanitary. Keeping everything clean in situations like these prevent the spread of diseases that can harm other animals and humans. I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

There are positive and negative aspects to being an animal shelter veterinarian. The most difficult part of being an animal shelter veterinarian is dealing with the behavioral problems of the shelter animals. “Animal Behavior for Shelter Veterinarians and Staff” supports my view that animal shelter veterinarians are required to deal with serious animal aggression and trauma. Shelter animals tend to have more behavioral problems than animals brought into a regular veterinary clinic. It is absolutely necessary to socialize with animals and read their body language in order to be the most successful shelter veterinarian possible.…

From vaccinating kittens to resuscitating a critical care patient, small animal veterinarians help pet owners create the best life for their companions. Taking care of my pets has been an irreplaceable experience, and I hope to help form similar relationships. Other types of veterinarians focus on research, foreign diseases, and the protection of our food supply. Veterinarians are increasingly dealing with the spread of zoonotic diseases such as the avian flu, leptospirosis, and salmonella. In less privileged countries, these diseases greatly affect food supply, so it is extremely important for vets to be immersed in our environment's health.…
