The global literacy percentage today is around 80%, nearly 70% greater than that in the 1850’s (Text 3). These higher levels of education have resulted in smarter and safer people, a necessity in today’s globalized world. In fact, in recent years the literacy rates of Less Developed Countries in South and East Asia have gone up by nearly 10% (Text 3). Countries that are going through the process of modernization are showing that there is a link between the process and education. This has substantially increased the length of time people live. The average life expectancy has risen by more than three times since the 1800’s (Text 1). There is a direct correlation between the number of educated people and their life expectancy. Educated people know how to treat disease, manage wounds, and practice preventative care.
