Modern Pirates in Somalia Many people believe that pirates are no longer around, this isn't true. Although modern day pirates are different the pirates of the past, they are still dangerous. They are beginning to become more bold, and are taking larger, more rewarding ships. First of all, these pirates can make extremely large sums of money, up to two million dollars a year. Piracy is Somalia's largest industry raking in $150 million every year (Axe). These pirates are more of a problem to Somalians than others, since many depend on UN food donations to survive (Axe).
