"As You Like it," a play composed by William Shakespeare was initially set in the time period of the early 1600’s; however, thanks to a clever ingenious director of this play, Rick Lombardo was able to give the production a slightly modern twist. Due to the initial time period set by William Shakespeare, I believe the director intended the play to have an older time period, but for comedic effect, the play does contain some modern elements. The time period greatly impacted the overall setting of the play and considerably affected the overall

By the end of the long journey within the play, nearly all of the characters within William Shakespeare's play achieve their dreams and love, except for two. The first character who remained unsuccessful in the common quest to find love was Jacques; this melancholy character played a role of sadness and enjoyed living a life of anguish. By the end of the play, nearly every character was falling in love with one another, but Jacques decided it was time to part ways and leave alone dramatically. Another character who did, in fact, get married but didn't truly achieve their dreams was Phoebe. After her banishment, Rosalind, the daughter of Duke Senior disguised herself as a man named Ganymede whom Phoebe fell in love with; both being girls, in the end, Phoebe was not able to marry Rosalind and had to marry her previous lover, Silvius. The character that received my empathy in the play was Rosalind; this was because Rosalind had to disguise herself as a man and struggle with expressing her love; she was not able to show affection to the man she secretly loved, Orlando. Rosalind was not able to express her love until the end of the play when her true self was …show more content…

The comical personalities all the characters had helped the audience become more intrigued in the story of this play. From this play, I liked that there was only one actor for each character. It made it easier to understand which character was which. The actors had different costumes, which made it easier to apprehend who was…

Good morning fellow aspiring directors, I’m here today from the Australian Film School and will be discussing the well known play Othello by Shakespeare, the play to this day is still very relevant, Shakespeare has done this by incorporating the themes jealousy, appearance and reality and racism which still occurs in our society today and can often appear in our day to day life. By including these themes in the play it keeps the relationship with the now modern audience despite the original plays age. This is seen in Geoffrey Sax’s 2001 film Othello, where Geoffrey has appropriated the film following the original plot but has changed many aspects of Shakespeare’s Othello to suit todays audience, while keeping the themes showing the same universal…

The Curate Shakespeare: As You Like It Throughout the play “The Curate Shakespeare: As You Like IT” one actor whose character choices I enjoyed the most and they come across as the most natural to me were made by Chelsea Hart-Cantabene. In the first act of the play she brought to life a cynical character, who really wants to be a part of something great, but will not allow herself to see the good that could possibly come out of her current situation. During the first act when the troop began to perform “As You Like It,” Cantabene’s strong character choices were present when she played her first “As you like it” role of Celia the daughter of banished duke.…

William Shakespeare highlights enduring ideas about the human condition through the use of dramatic techniques in his tragedy plays. In his play Macbeth, Shakespeare effectively uses the dramatic techniques of character development, commentary by others and symbolism to reveal the enduring ideas of power, greed and ambition, along with its corruptive appeal; relationships and betrayal; and the common issues of loyalty leading to deception. These ideas are shown in exploring the tragic downfall of Macbeth. The enduring idea of corruptive ambition, including power and greed, is explored by the use of dramatic techniques of characterisation, symbolism and commentary by others.…

Throughout both the film Tootsie and Shakespeare’s As You Like It, the idea of gender crossover is used, and while the idea of gender itself is examined, this crossover’s affect on love relationships is the main focus. Both Michael Dorsey and Rosalind, the protagonists of their respects works, pretend for a short time to be the opposite gender. Both are also in love with someone who, for the time being, is the same gender as they are – Michael falls in love in his disguise, while Rosalind falls in love beforehand.…

Phoebe’s behavior and personality drastically changes as soon as she lays eyes on Rosalind as Ganymede. The shepherdess decides to use Silvius’ love to her advantage when she pronounces to Silvius: the “company, which erst was irksome to me, / I will endure; and I’ll employ thee too” (3.5.94-95). When Phoebe falls in love, her moral compass disappears and she begins to manipulate Silvius into doing her bidding. Shakespeare also demonstrates the negative consequences of love through a different character in the play, Touchstone. When Touchstone encounters the man who loves his wife-to-be, whilst experiencing intense jealousy, he threatens to “kill [the man] a hundred and fifty ways.…

As You Like It is the work of world-renowned playwright William Shakespeare. Although he had no university education, he went on to become a successful writer who created more than 40 impressive plays and 150 beautiful sonnets. However, there are academics who maintain that Shakespeare never actually wrote any of his plays but simply lent his name to be used as a pen name for more educated, more knowledgeable writers. The true authorship of Shakespeare’s works is not the only controversial aspect of Shakespeare’s life.…

In English class this year we are reading a play called “Julius Caesar” by Shakespeare. So far it has been an interesting play, but we cannot read something unless we understand the setting of the play. This play is set in Ancient Rome, so we have to understand the role of the characters in their time. In the play we are introduced to two characters, Flavius and Marullus. They are Tribunes in Rome.…

William Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night and the film Shakespeare in Love deal with the complexities of gender and sexuality. Even though the play Twelfth Night was published nearly four hundred years before Shakespeare in Love was released, Shakespeare’s play represents a more modern outlook on gender. Both materials involve cross-dressing, but cross-dressing is more of a feature in Shakespeare in Love, while Twelfth Night actually delves into the complexities of what it means to be either male or female. My belief is that one’s gender does not necessarily coincide with one’s biological sex. While transgendered people are still struggling to be accepted in today’s world, they have been experiencing much more acceptance than they have in the…

As novelist and playwright Gao Xingjian states, "It 's in literature that true life can be found. It 's under the mask of fiction that you can tell the truth” (Xingjian 2008). I begin to wonder if Xingjian 's insight can be applied to all texts in literature, and whether the truth is in fact guarded by the writer 's literary style. Perhaps it is the technique that gives clues to allow me, the reader, to decipher the hidden truth. I wonder if the writing style highlights the philosophy, or if the philosophy is what encourages the use of a certain technique.…

As we have discussed in class, theater conventions change over time with the changes in social and political issues. To show this, I will discuss the differences between the plays, “Edward II”, which was played during the Elizabethan period (1594) and “Beggar’s Opera”, which was played during the 17th century (1727). First I will discuss the play, Edward II written by Christopher Marlowe. Christopher Marlowe is known as the first great Renaissance playwright since he was the first who made plays that were non-secular, meaning that it was neither about the church nor religion. This specific play is about King Edward II, who was in power in history and his friend Gaveston took him away from his royal and important duties and made King Edward…

Not many of Shakespeare’s plays contain a female character in the lead role position. Therefore, when female characters have a prominent role in plays it is something to pay attention to. For instance, in Measure for Measure, Isabella’s character serves to break down the patriarchy by using their own constructs to emphasize how outrageous their ideas are. Isabella does this by falling into one of the three categories that the patriarchy says women belong to. In this society, women are either maid, widow, or wife and problems occur when women do not fall into one of the three defined categories.…
