Before I took Italian 1, I did not know much about the modern Italy. I knew that Italy was a world super power during the Renaissance and rise and fall of the Roman Empire, but I never thought of it to be a modern power. I was very wrong. Italy is still one of the most advance and culturally influential nations on the planet. They are a nation of swift innovation, bold design, and cultural influence. Italy is a nation that historically, and still today, pushes the boundaries in almost every realm including both the arts and the sciences. A few iconic companies that we learned about was Versace and Prada. Versace is a company that was founded in Milan in 1978 that produced luxury leather items. The original designer was heavily influenced by music and tried to tie music to her clothes. Also, the designer used the head of Medussa for her logo in hopes that it would be recognizable and tie back to Italian mythology. Prada was formed in 1913 by Mario Prada. Originally, Prada started with selling travel based leather products such as trunks and suitcases. Eventually, with some resistance, Mario’s daughter joined the company and designed backpacks and later with the help of her later husband, designed men’s clothing. Now, international icon Prada produces everything ranging from fragrances to clothes. Overall, I think the main difference between the United States and Italy is that the United States are less community and tradition based. Italy celebrates their roots and celebrates traditions that are centuries old, something the United States does value as deeply. The United States is a newer nation that has many different demographics and backgrounds, which I think creates a less uniform celebrations and traditions. Also, the United States is such a large land, it would be tough to have a uniform
