[13] The 60 inch telescope would end up being a valuable tool for a number of scientists leading to numerous impressive observations. Another notable detail is that this telescope was the first to be outfitted with a new adaptive mirror system, allowing the mirror to be adjusted with the fluctuations of the atmosphere. [14] This observatory was so impressive that it would eventually be used by Edwin Hubble to make stunning discoveries about the Andromeda galaxy. [15] The observatory was part of much scientific research, there is no doubt about that, but now it serves a different, but equally important role. It is open to the public and serves as a vital part of education on the stars and our research. It is pretty fascinating that something as important as this is open for anyone to come up and study. There were many other large telescopes to follow, each being involved with it’s own particular fields of study, but the Mount Wilson Observatory was the first, and potentially the most important.
Massive telescopes on top of mountains are exciting and extremely impressive, but that wasn’t enough for scientists. What if you could take an enormous telescope, built with all of the modern bells and whistles, and then send that much closer to the stars. Closer than any mountain top observatory, or tall tower. That is precisely what was accomplished with the Hubble Space Telescope. An incredible work of craftsmanship and technology, scientists would have a front row seat to the stars we so desperately
