Tattoos have passed from something that’s cool, or bad, to a way of life in some cases. This paper is about modern day tattoos, the meaning behind them, and the way they are perceived in the eye of the public. I have a high opinion to start with on this topic, because my easily hidden tattoos are covering a good portion of my skin. My own personal opinion of tattoos is that they hold a deep meaning for almost every person, not saying this is true for everyone, but in most cases I believe this is true. Each tattoo of mine is dedicated to a time, a person, or a memory that is telling something of an important part in my life. I used to be judged for the huge multiple decorations of tattoos covering more than half of the one side of my body. How did we get so far into accepting our children tattooing themselves, forming the next generation to love them as much as this one if not more? People cannot judge all of society if everyone is covered in tattoos. The meaning of a tattoo now has such a broad meaning that society now has to find something else to judge other people for. There are all different stereotypes of people who have tattoos, having a tattoo no longer points to a certain type of person. This changing the meaning of a tattoo because it’s no longer a way to judge people. Tattoos no longer make you a gang member, or no longer makes you anything. How can a wedding ring be judged, the celebrity who is just supporting his opinion, the child who wants to draw a pretty picture on the skin, the person with the photo to remember the loved one lost, the memory of the time they fell in love, and the millions of other reasons.
