Modern Day Stereotyping

Stereotyping is a fixed idea of a particular person or thing. With stereotyping comes many associated topics such as gender roles and identities,mental illnesses, religion and race. Many people think that stereotyping only affects women, however, this is not true. Men are victims to many stereotyping incidents as well including being muscular, sportive and dumb. Being categorised into a specific group before having a say yourself is bound to cause problems. Gender roles and identities have a large part in modern day stereotyping. If a man compliments another man he is automatically gay, however if a woman compliments another woman they're just friends. If a woman cries she's over emotional but when a man cries he’s “girly”. These are a few examples of stereotypes that people have been sorted into like books in a library. None of these things are bad, yet people make fun of them causing others to feel ashamed of the way they are. It's even worse if you are transgender because not only could you feel ashamed of yourself in front of other people but others label you as invalid because they don't see you gender as a real gender. Stereotyping generally begins when the doctor tells you, “it's a girl/boy” this is when the pink and blue, dolls and cars, and short and long hair naturally come into play. …show more content…
Things like gender, mental illness, race and religion are heavily impacted by stereotypes by people that don’t know enough about the topic they’re assigning a stereotype to or by people trying to make cruel and hateful jokes.
