Modern Day Sexting Research Paper

Decent Essays
Considerations of a Modern Day Sexter In the increasing world of electronic use for all of our wants and needs, relationships continue to evolve through messages opposed to face-to-face contact. Romantic relationships are just as affected by this. The idea of sexting is something that should not be taken lightly. The dictionary gives a definition of sexting as “noun, 1. the sending of sexually explicit photos, images, text messages, or emails by using a cell phone or other mobile device”. It would behoove us to think about if there are repercussions for ourselves, our partners and our children (or future children) before we engage in such behavior.

Sometimes they are nothing more than consensual teen experimentation, and she argues that this should not be considered illegal. However, she also mentions some more serious cases that have raised concerns about sexting in general. Rosin states that "Michael Harmony, the commander of the southern-Virginia branch of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force... has dealt with a 13-year-old who posted her naked picture on MeetMe.com and had grown men show up at her house. He’s investigated a 17-year-old boy who blackmailed a girl into sending him naked pictures, and another boy who threatened to send out the naked pictures a girl had given him if she didn’t have sex with him. " Cases like these go beyond regular teen sexting, and support the reasoning behind some states' reluctance to passing any sexting-specific laws at all, not wanting to risk being lenient on child…

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, sexting is defined as “the sending of sexually explicit messages or images by cell phone.” After reading about sexting and several cases in our textbook, in my opinion I think there are some flaws to this law. Although it is obvious that sexting can lead to consequence to those who become victims it seems like it should only be applied to certain things and not everything. For example, the female juveniles who took nude photos of themselves, and sent them to three boys should not face felony criminal charges. Based on the minimal facts given in the textbook, it does not make sense to charge someone who took nude photographs of themselves with child pornography because they are under 18 and in addition…

According to Rosin, parents should consider them lucky because sexting does not create sexual dynamics it reveals sexual dynamics. Elizabeth Englander, a psychology professor at Bridgewater State University, finds a vast category of women, mostly called ‘Pressured sexters’ who share nude pictures out of insecurity, vulnerability and peer pressure. Sending texts to those they do not know well is not a kind of trust relationship they form with them. There is a risk involved that the picture can get out but usually it does not happen. The teens consider it as flirting or being sexually active rather than a crime.…

Patricia Loher SOC- 220 10/28/14 1. Before entering this sociology class I have never heard of the phrase moral panic before. So to me after learning about what exactly a moral panic is, in my own words a moral panic is basically an extreme panicked response expressed by the public believing that a certain issue threatens a “normal” society, (social order). When comparing Cohen’s processual model and Goode and Ben-Yehuda attributional model of moral panics, there are many similarities and many differences. Both of the models state that moral panics are some kind of extreme forms of actions, motions, occurrences that construct social problems in a society.…

I struggled with Michael Warner’s “New English Sodom.” It was an interesting read, but it was hard to follow at several point, but the big takeaway that I got from it, is that, Sodom had not always had the sexual connotations that it has today, but rather that it was often employed in the rhetoric of collective judgement or punishment. England was compared to Sodom by Puritans who later moved to the United States, because they were both seen as degenerate and in need of condemnation and punishment. I found this incredibly interesting because Sodom is not alluded to for these purposes today, at least in my experience. Sodom and sodomy, tend to have legal air to them (as well as religious, of course), because of anti-sodomy laws.…

This essay analyzes the sources Joe Rollins uses and the Page Real Estate of the court cases, how the cases relate to the audience of gender studies,…

Research suggests that young adults feel “sexting is a safe sex practice, sexting is risqué and that sexting is a cultural norm of sexually active couples” (Levine, 2013). However, sexting is not always a consensual sexual practice and can sometimes be used as a form of sexual abuse. Now minors can be charged for photographing, spreading, and owning child pornography for “sexting” nude photographs of themselves to other minors. According to page 185 of the book, Under current Washington law, any minor involved simply in consensual sexting with a person his or her own age faces felony charges, up to five years in prison, and mandatory sex offender registration. Child pornography laws were not intended to address sexting, the legal consequences…

Recently conversation has sparked between many feminist and non-feminist about the younger generation’s new hookup culture. Many believe that this cultural change from the standard dating scene to just hooking is a bad thing because its making young women look bad and making them degrade themselves, but many believe that this is actually a power statement for women because they have the freedom to have casual sex without any consequences or expectations. I feel like the presents of this hookup culture is making women stronger mentally, sexually and physically. Hanna Rosin articulates about this in her article “boys on the side”.…
