Modern Day Eve
Ever since the Garden of Eden, women have made up their mind that they can make their own decisions. This plague happened in the Garden of Eden, when the woman (Eve) was so easily persuaded by the serpent (Devil) yet the man (Adam) was so gullible to follow. Men possess a certain type of power that some women want in their life. In the memoir The Only Girl In The Car, Kathy Dobie fell into this category of a modern day Eve; she wanted to feel like she had power. The only way she could achieve this power is through sex. In doing this she hit rock bottom. Many terrible things happened to her that resulted of her want this feeling. Relating Kathy to Eve, they both possess some of the same qualities, temptation, innocence, lust, and being a follower.
When Kathy turned fourteen, she had one thing on her mind: boys. Teenagers, and grown men, she was tempted by them. She made the message clear with her tank tops and her hips that she wanted the attention men could give her. Just like Eve was tempted by the devil, boys tempted Kathy Dobie. Eve lusted over a fruit, her desire for the fruit was so strong that she gave in and took a bite. Kathy lusted over the power the boys had. “When I was touched without really being noticed, I swooned with pleasure. Sixteen-year-old boys were my destiny”(19). Both girls lusted over something that would get them in trouble. Eve knew the fruit was not to be tasted, but her lust for the fruit over took her decision-making. Kathy, too, was blinded by lust; she knew what the boys could give her would fulfill her desire for lust but not her heart, but she settled for the lust anyway. The quality of lust compares Kathy to what a modern day Eve would be

Written in 1984, Susan Minot’s short story “Lust” is a tale about a young teenager’s sexual encounters and its effects on her female psyche. In a clutter of unorganized paragraphs, the narrator expresses her sexual history and feelings towards these sexual encounters. She focuses on the gender roles that are the complete opposite of what would be expected during the feminist movement of the 1970’s and the 1980’s, implying Minot’s personal views on the effectiveness of the movement, as well as talking about the pressure and expectations of women by society and how those expectations show signs of lust, not love. Right out the start, Minot creates a very nonchalant tone for the narrator.…

Cormier, the author of the short story “Another of Mike’s Girls”, believed that love had a strong influence over the lives of those who are impacted by it. Not all love is romantic, and, often times, love is felt by a parent to their child. That kind of love, as mature as it may be, makes people as intransigent as the typical teen romance. Affection causes people to be irrational in their thinking, but it also can consume people. It can bring people up to the point”…of triumph and pride,” but it can also damage spirits and ”…lack motivation.”…

In the short story Miss Temptation by Kurt Vonnegut, it was made obvious that the prominent theme was the sexuality, and the sensuality, of the main character, Susanna. The story starts with the line, “Puritanism had fallen into such disrepair that not even the oldest spinster thought of putting Susanna in a ducking stool; not even the oldest farmer suspected that Susanna’s diabolical beauty had made his cow run dry.” Vonnegut mentioning Puritanism falling to shambles and cows running dry because of a beautiful girl is, in a sense, a gateway into the overall subject matter. Before Susanna is truly introduced as a character, she is made out to be somewhat of a bad character, saying she had made cows run dry.…

In literature, love has always been a concept of great debate, although, what exactly is love? Pamela C. Regan, from Los Angeles University, explains that “…A person who experiences sexual desire for another individual, along with other emotional or psychological events, may characterize his or her state as one of ‘being in love…’” (Regan 139). However, does this sexual desire always breed emotion? When one thinks of love, thoughts of tenderness, kindness, and romance often arise with it.…
