Is Modern Culture Ruining Childhood? What reminds you of your childhood? Everyone has different, distinct memories that come flowing back to them when asked that question. Times are changing, which is clear through modern infants, toddlers, children, teens, and young adults. With modernization, children seem to mature at a faster rate and have more access to unfavorable material now more than ever. Children now are becoming less disciplined and less active in the home and schools. What has caused this new pattern we see? Many suggest that media, trends, and lack of communication habits are to blame for ruining simple and carefree childhood. These aspects of modern society negatively affect everyone, especially growing children and young adults. ¨Back in the day,¨ children did not have access to various social media platforms like we do currently. A 2015 study shows that the average teen spends 9 hours every day on electronics posting, texting, and socializing. Many parents worry about how technology could affect toddlers and kids at every stage and age. Growing up, we start to learn how to communicate, rationally solve problems, and engage in listening. Cell phones and texting detach us from face to face communication and acts as a barrier in expanding our social skills. Through online connections, there is little to no expression which leads to misunderstandings and loss of emotion. Personal conversations and communication allow us to attain manners and healthy adult interactions. Research that surveyed 280 high school students showed that students were much less nervous meeting friends online than they were meeting new people in person. By communicating through text message and social media, there is a loss in social and personal
