Despite the fact that my ultimate goal in college is to attend nursing school, I still thoroughly enjoy activities that involve speech and debate. My school is small, but still offers a wide variety of debate clubs and competitions. I have participated in several, but the one that has had the most influence on me is mock trial. Mock trial is a competition in which students are given a fabricated case complete with characters and evidence. The case is split into teams of plaintiff and defendant. Each team has six roles, three witnesses and three lawyers, but only 10 people are allowed to participate in the competition. This means that some students must take on extra roles to compensate. After months of dedicated preparation, the case is presented in an actual courtroom against an opposing team.

This club helped me meet new people and gave me the ability to improve in a plethora of areas such as public speaking, logic and reasoning, and teambuilding. Mock trial, and the people involved in it, helped me break out of my shell and be more confident in myself. It also introduced me to people that were, and still are, the most understanding and friendly people I’ve ever met. I have done mock trial all four years of high school, and each year the team changes and grows
