Mock Trial In High School

Improved Essays
Being a shy freshman in a student body of over two thousand students, high school was a difficult situation for me to tackle. I was never comfortable around people in my school, so I searched for clubs to help me adapt to a new social order. It was due to this that I wound up in Mock Trial, a club I had no idea even existed but ended up loving. Mock Trial has taught me how to function in uncomfortable situations and how to lead those around me to success. While Mock Trial is a club for future lawyers and actors, I think that it should be a required experience for any profession simply because of the effect it has had on my life. In the club, students must translate complicated law, preposterous witness statements, and bizarre exhibits

The theatre has a specific purpose of conveying a narrative. A lawyer’s goal in any trial is to tell a specific narrative to the jury. There are two competing narratives in the courtroom, so it is a lawyers ethical duty to the client to try and expand the storyline as to convince the jury of the most probable account. The actors found in a theatre can be paralleled to the members of a court.…

Overall, this year’s Native Son Mock Trial went very well, even if there are a few growth areas for the lawyers and witnesses. Most of the lawyers did a very good job presenting their ideas and examining witnesses. Growth areas for them would be to be more prepared when going up questioning the witnesses, speaking louder, and actually asking relevant questions that would support their side. Additionally, I think the judge should know her responsibilities better and know when to say what. In addition, the judge should have been more forceful and assertive, so the trial could go by smoothly.…

The Smart Trial Debate Judge Glassford sits at the head of the classroom as students take each other on in a debate that questions the innocence or guilt of Pamela Smart in the conspiracy to murder her husband Gregory Smart. The students in the English 151-38 class had been divided into two groups: Prosecution (Affirmative of Pamela Smart’s guilt) vs. Defense (Negative- Pamela Smart is innocent), prior to this eventful day. During the debate, both sides provided valid evidence for their arguments on the Smart Trial. Being on the Defense side allows me to provide an account of the events that occurred during this student-debate and also a reflection on how effectively my team members debated Pamela Smart’s innocence. First and foremost, the…

The majority of the studies have not revealed an effect of mock jurors. Heinrick (2006) and Lawson(2009) quoted, “Specifically, the CSI effect hypothesizes that, as a result of unrealistic depictions of forensic evidence on crime television shows (such as CSI), jurors may be overly influenced by forensic evidence in the courtroom, leading to two distinct possibilities: 1) when no forensic evidence is present, jurors will acquit, and…

Chances are high that more people have been faced by a trial, not the kind in court, but the kind where they are competing to show prowess in something. If they have succeeded in the trial they have felt accomplished or if you failed you just stay angry for a little bit at first and then you just think what you could of done or done better. Better yet, you failed even though you (thought) you did everything perfect or at least 95% right and you’re just waiting on the verdict like “man, I’ve got this one in the history books 100% and there’s no way I could've failed.”…

“May it please the court, your honor, opposing council, members of the jury - an impossible burden means an impossible conviction,” Sophomore Lora Randa said to a crowd of people gathered in a courtroom in Eau Claire on Feb. 11. Tension and competition filled the room as she continued to tell the story of an innocent girl being accused of first degree reckless homicide. Finding myself in the same room I came to years ago caused me to experience again how difficult being a high school freshman was at the time. Before entering the group, I assumed the session would be light-hearted and playful, forgetting my own personal experiences. After spending a short while with the group, there was a shift within me where I began to experience more empathy and understanding of the power within the group. I also felt a shift when the members began to share about their lives, causing me to feel honored to listen to their stories. Although I was once a high school student, experiencing this group gave me a greater perspective on high school students, reminding myself of the difficulties we all experience, regardless of our…

if there is one thing college has taught me, it is that it does not matter what you think you are going to become, or how far back you start from, but it is that determination in the place of those disadvantages is what makes all the difference. I did not choose to be a lawyer because anyone in my family was, in fact, no one in my family worked anything close to it. My mother has worked as a waitress, a seamstress in a factory, and finally as a baker since arriving in this country. I took it upon myself to try and become something more, something that my mother did not have the opportunity to be. As the oldest child in a house of three I fulfilled the function of the interpreter in the family, which gave me the sense of responsibility and maturity that came with that role.…

Gardening was a ‘forced’ hobby for a good portion of my childhood. Since elementary school, I worked with my dad in our back yard; I would dig holes, carry bags of manure, and plant flowers and trees. I complained that it would be easier to go to the store and buy a bag of blackberries instead of toiling in the sun for hours to achieve the same thing. I never imagined that I’d end up gardening for fun. Every year, my brother and I would collect the fruits of our labor; every year, I’d appreciate my efforts more and more.…
