The Zoot Suit Riots started when a group of U.S sailors were attacked by Zoot Suiters in Los Angeles. As a result for 7 days service men would enter barrios and attack the Mexican-American community where many Pachucos were badly beaten and stripped of their suits. What was ironic about this event was that many Zoot Suiters were seen as people who were not supportive of WWII, and America. In reality many Zoot Suiters were actually U.S servicemen, in fact one of the main leaders of the Zoot Suiters was enlisted in the Marines. After 7 days of riots, the Los Angeles City Council had passed a bill stating that Zoot Suits were to be banned in Los Angeles.…

Abe Lincoln is Dead, and You are not Free: The Memphis Riot of 1866 and Its Roots in the Social Upheaval of the Reconstruction Nathin J. Birkrem Abstract On 1 May 1866 in the city of Memphis, Tennessee, an altercation between black Union soldiers and Memphis police officers started a chain reaction that eventually brought about what has come to be known as the Memphis Riots of 1866. The group of amicably intoxicated soldiers reacted negatively when told by a small group of officers to break up their party, and although no one was seriously injured, the situation quickly escalated to the point where shots were fired on both sides (Carden 2). This incident, however, was not the cause of the Memphis Riots.…
Many of the areas of Los Angeles became Latinized as Latinos revived the city’s commerce after the population decline. During this socio-economic demographic shift in the urban areas of Los Angeles, a horrific event occurred when a group of police officers were announced not guilty for the police brutality committed on Rodney King. This incident gave rise to the unforgettable Los Angeles Riots initiated by the African American community, who voiced their anger through violence and chaos towards the social injustice. Additionally, the media broadcasted this scandalous event and mainly focused on…

In the early 1940’s inhabitants of Los Angeles experience widespread tension and conflict that ultimately led to the Zoot Suit riots. Along with these social tensions come the influence of jazz music that developed into a rich culture that flourished throughout Los Angeles area (PBS). Big band and swing music were popular during this time period but it was the growth of Jazz music that led all these different ethnicities such as Mexican, Filipino, Irish, and African American citizens to wear “Zoot Suits”. This symbolic attire defined the subculture that embodied ethnic life in 1940s Los Angeles.…
Sources: The source of conflict in the Attica Prison Riot was Relative Deprivation. Relative deprivation theory states, “the primary source of the human capacity for violence is the frustration-aggression mechanism. There is a discrepancy between what people think they deserve, and what they actually think they can get” (Langdon Sources Slides, 2018). More specifically, one feels deprived relative to a reasonable standard (Pruitt & Kim, 2004).…
‘Guards’ were given minimal guidelines so their interaction with ‘prisoners’ would be genuine in their role. The only explicit direction they received was regarding the prohibition of physical punishment towards the ‘prisoners’ to maintain the safety of all subjects within the mock prison. The behavior of both groups, was analyzed per the “transactions between and within each group of subjects, recorded on video and audio tape as well as directly observed; and individual reactions on questionnaires, mood inventories, personality tests,…

Prison riots are caused by many issues, and cannot be linked to just one thing. There are several factors that one must look at is the crime rate within the prison itself. When this world became to cold for my friend, he took his…
