Mock Congress Reflection

Improved Essays
I thought mock Congress was a great experience. I learned many things about our government, and I had fun while doing so. Mock congress was a new experience for everyone. It showed who could put up a good argument and who does a good job at doing research. This was one class activity that I would like to do again.
I was required to research the bill that involved a resolution to fund the arts and a bill to incentivize voting. To go against funding the arts, I found information that explained how many people don't go into arts and why it would not be good to fund it even more. I found lists that stated how any kind of art is a poor profession to go into. In support of incentivizing voting, I found statistics showing how few people vote.

Some people did not get what I was saying and it was very hard to convince them. The easiest part was defending my bill. I knew much information so I was able to answer any questions easily. The part I enjoyed the most was presenting my bills and being able to state my opinion freely. I loved how shocked people would be at some of my responses to their questions. The only part that I did not like was that some people just sat and did not say anything. It is much more exciting if everyone participates. I thought that Kody Merrell did a great job participating. He asked me many questions that were difficult to answer and was able to answer my questions efficiently. I thought he was the best congressman. Kody put up a tough argument in mock congress.
Mock congress was a great experience. The only way that it could have been a little better was if everyone would follow the procedure better. It also could have been better if we possibly could have gotten through a few more bills. Other than that, mock congress was entertaining and enjoyable. I feel as if every student should have an opportunity to participate in a mock congress. I just think that it was such a wonderful experience and I would love to do it

Overall, this year’s Native Son Mock Trial went very well, even if there are a few growth areas for the lawyers and witnesses. Most of the lawyers did a very good job presenting their ideas and examining witnesses. Growth areas for them would be to be more prepared when going up questioning the witnesses, speaking louder, and actually asking relevant questions that would support their side. Additionally, I think the judge should know her responsibilities better and know when to say what. In addition, the judge should have been more forceful and assertive, so the trial could go by smoothly.…

On October 14th my class went to Springfield IL the capital of Illinois. We enjoyed a 3 hour bus ride to Springfield and when we arrived we saw some awesome museums and even Lincoln's house! But, the coolest thing that I believe we did was seeing Lincoln's tomb. As we rounded the bend and the anticipation was growing we finally saw the giant monument in his honor; it was magnificent.…

Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed class discussion and the various presentations put forth by the many conservation officers that have come in to speak. Friday and Wednesday’s gallery walk was a huge learning experience. I learned so much about topics that I didn’t know anything about like Kent State, The Space Race and the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. When I was presenting I loved seeing how interested people were in my topic as was I. People had so many questions and it was great to be able to know so much and answer them. My topic was the John F. Kennedy assassination.…

For Mock Congress, I had to do Bills Five. Bill Five was a bill to incentivize voting. This bill said that everyone who votes should get a certain amount of tax credit. The idea of the bill was that if you give people an incentive, more people would vote. Being a Democrat, I was assigned to create a speech against this bill.…

Looking back a week later, the Young Democrats High School Leadership Academy was nowhere near what I imagined. And I mean that in a good way. I had an idea going into the conference of what I expected out of it: marketing, social media branding, touring, and networking. And yet, in hindsight, YDA HSLA was all of that, but immensely more.…

I enjoyed the Freshman Cultural Event. Although trying to get everyone together to take a picture was pretty difficult, when we were done, we had a good time. When I found out about the job and internship fair assignment I was very excited to visit the booths and experience a job fair for the first time. It was a very new experience but I enjoyed and plan on visiting more throughout my time here at UT. I visited three booths at the job fair; the campus dining booth, the Pepsi booth, and the Pilot booth. All three companies had a lot of information and insight to share about their companies.…

I believe that the convention simulation from my point of view was an amazing learning tool. I have grown up listening to others do nothing but complain about how poorly the government is handling a situation. I bet almost all of those critics I had been listening to for all those years had no idea the amount of time and energy is spent in running this country. I had no idea how hard it was going to be to get over half of the class to get in the same boat on an issue during the convention. I was a little confused about how Texas threatening to secede was connected to the convention though.…

After only attending a municipality meeting once in high school for a civics paper, I was really blown away by the level of professionalism and efficiency that took place at this legislative meeting. Although it would be unfair of me to compare the small Dallas Township Municipal meeting with the Legislative session that took place at the Historic Courthouse that evening on February 21st at six o’clock. I really didn’t know what to expect for the most part, but once the meeting began I was able to use what information we had covered in class to help understand and put into words what legislation went through the County Council. To my surprise, a portion of the meeting felt like it was straight from a popular late night television special highlighting…

Due to having a simulation lab this past week we had preparation to complete before hand. The Visualization and Simulation Center (VSIM) served as training, to prepare us for similar real life scenarios. I was able to use the content we learned in class and connect it to the current simulation I was working on. Following the competition of each online situation I was able to read an evaluation to see where I excelled and where I need to improve upon.…

This past Saturday, I went to deaf awareness day at White Bear Lake High school. I had been eyeballing the event for some time since it seemed like a good way to see what the Deaf community is like on a larger scale than a single theater performance or game. I drove with Beth, and we ended up bumping into additional classmates on our way into the event. The six of us spent our time walking around to the many booths and asking questions as we went. I was surprised by the variety of presenters.…

Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort my group put into this project. In terms of attending the group meetings, everyone was present and participated in the discussion. The first meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon at Baruch and the second meeting took place on a weeknight in the form of a Google Hangout. The times and places of these meetings alone displayed every group members’ commitment to the project, effort to accommodate for scheduling conflicts, and effort to ensure they are contributing their fair share to the group regardless the time or day of the week. At these meetings, we discussed ways to engage the crowd and critiqued each other’s slides and presentations.…
