In this case it is both. Starbuck is a man of faith, he stuck to his beliefs; there is only one God and his captain Ahab was his God. His beliefs were, “you obey your God and you do not disobey him, you have complete trust in what he will do.” Starbuck did not trust Ahab though, he was losing faith. But, even though he was losing faith he still never disobeyed his God. He was too good of a man, there comes a certain point when one chooses between life and death. Most choose life, Starbuck chooses faith. One cannot be “too religious” but one can be oblivious to religion. Starbuck could have killed Ahab and lived and took the ship back to shore and still got his whale oil money, but he chose religion and was being oblivious because he let religion get in the way of life. Starbuck ended up dying on the ship even though he did not even go out on the boats with the crew. He never stood up to his God because of faith and he died for it, that could symbolize honor. The coffin was what the carpenter made, or what Christ made. It was made originally for Queequeg symbolizing death because Queequeg was going to die in it.
