Circumstances and Plot The 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) has a wounded soldier come in who is in especially bad shape. Major Frank Burns is among one of the highest ranking surgeons in the unit so he volunteers to take charge of the soldier’s medical needs. The wounded soldier eventually starts to fall under because of the blood loss and internal bleeding. Major Burns feels the soldier’s death is now imminent so he does not try any harder to save the patient. Captain Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce is the most skilled surgeon in the unit and decides to jump into action. He still thinks there is a chance for the patient and begins to operate on him. Pierce feels the need of perfection and cannot let the soldier die so he operates rapidly
