Mo Willems was born on Feb 11, 1968 in Des Plaines Illinois. His parents were Dutch immigrants; his mother went on to be an attorney and his father became a potter making ceramic pieces. When Mo Willems was a child he doodled all the time. His childhood life long dream was to “take over Charles Schulz's job when he died. I wanted to do 'Peanuts.'" Although that dream did not transpire, he ended up touching the world with his many works of art. Willems studied film and animation at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
After graduation he went on to write and animate for Sesame Street starting in 1993. Throughout his nine seasons with the show he went on to win 6 Emmy awards before he left in 2002. During his time with Sesame Street Mo got married to Cheryl Camp in 1997. When in an interview Mo Willems reveals that “it was at Sesame Street that I learned how to write for children… By the time I was gone I realized this was where I wanted my career to be.” Along with his success in the TV industry Willems also created the cartoons for children Sheep in the Big City

All of his books are children’s books and he’s written more than 40 books to this day. One book not in a series is City Dog, Country Frog is a beautifully illustrated story and teaches students about the impact of a friendship even when that person is gone. Today I Will Fly is apart of the Elephant and Piggie series. In this story, we follow Elephant and Piggie on an adventure to make Piggie fly. This tells students that nothing is impossible if they help their friends. Another Elephant and Piggie story Listen to My Trumpet is about Piggie getting a trumpet and not being able to play it well and Elephant having to tell her she is not good. This teaches students how to say you didn’t like or enjoy something politely without hurting their
