Characteristics of mixed methods research
When deciding on a research method, interviewers can choose from several options. Mixed methods research is one of the research methods “widely practiced and accepted in many areas of health care research” (Sale, Lohfeld, & Brazil, 2002, p. 44). “ The mixed methods studies are framed by a pragmatic approach to research” (Parylo, 2012, p.299). Quantitative and qualitative research elements, combined in the same study, fulfill the requirement of a mixed method research (Van Griensven, Moore, & Hall, 2014, p. 367). Therefore, characteristics of the mixed method include the elements of a quantitative research method as well as the qualitative research method. According to Sale, Lohfeld, and Brazil, “the quantitative paradigm is based on positivism, (….) that there is only one truth, an objective reality that exists independent of human perception” (2002, p. 44).
