If you do not believe that using social media for election campaigns is effective – just look at how it worked for Barack Obama in 2008 and later 2012. He built a following of over 20,000,000 followers just on Twitter, and used Facebook to interact and connect with his supporters. Furthermore, the finding that showed that although candidates did utilize social media extensively, online electoral patterns were normalized. Also, that citizens’ use of social media during the campaign was very low. This is exceptionally different to Twitter and Facebook use in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, where Tweets made national waves and Facebook spread heavily bias or simply fact news. Social media has remained a powerful source of campaigning activity during the 2012 Presidential elections. However, advertising has become much more precise in 2012 than compared to its clumsy, proto form in 2008. Much more research has been done to have media distribute the correct or appropriate form of messages or advertisement to specific audiences; it was all thanks to new technology, namely Facebook's "sponsored-results tool", that can gather voter information through cookies and data that websites can collect for researchers and marketers to analyze. For example, people who liked or browsed Obama's Facebook posts were more likely to see Obama's presidential campaign advertisements appear wherever they browse on the world wide web. However, Romney's campaigning organization employed the sponsored-results tool more than the Obama campaign and easily redirected users to the Romney and Paul campaign website even though users searched for other candidates such as Obama,…

“Retweet” is a common expression now used by teenagers when they approve of what someone else has to say. With this simple word we can see just how much social media influences our lives. Journalist and staff writer for The New Yorker, Malcolm Gladwell, in his article, SMALL CHANGE: Why the Revolution Won’t Be Tweeted, discusses how social media will never replace the effectiveness of high risk activism. Gladwell’s purpose is to convince people that social media isn’t as promising to change the status quo as many believe it is. He creates an authoritative tone to interest his intended audience to do something bigger than social media can ever offer.…
