In the story Blanche is antithetical with Stella, her sister. Stella is displayed as a soft spoken, tame women; while Blanche is a loud, flashy women. This can be shown in "[Stella comes out on the first floor landing, a gentle young women..." and "Look at these feathers and furs that she come here to preen herself in! What's this here? A solid-gold dress, I believe! And this one! What is these here? Fox-pieces! Genuine fox fur-pieces, a half a mile long! Where are your fox-pieces, Stella?" This shows how Blanche's attire has more of a big scene, flashy sense to it; while Stella's clothes have more of a normal, comfortable look to them. Mitch wants to have a companion to fill is void of loneliness. Mitch cannot have a relationship with a women, because no women wants a mama's boy. This can be shown in, "I gotta sick mother...She says go out, so I go, but I don't enjoy it. All the while I keep wondering how she is." This shows how Mitch is attached to his sick mother, which women do not find attractive at all. Mitch also cannot find a steady relationship with someone, because he has a lack of social skills when it comes to dealing with women. This can be shown in, "I am ashamed of the way I perspire. My shirt is sticking to me." and "My weight is not a very interesting subject to talk about. What's yours?" This shows how Mitch has no game when talking to the ladies. First of all, women hate to be asked their weight, and second, women feels it's not very attractive when men point out their insecurities. Women like a man with confidence.
