Throughout this entire novel, the reader is introduced to a multitude of characters, as well as many different parts of the plot. The novel continued to focus on the main characters from the first book of the series, American Assassin, but it also introduced many new characters that are very pertinent to the plot. At first, it is a lot to handle and gets very confusing trying to juggle all of the characters and remember their specific roles and characteristics throughout the story. As the reader progresses through the novel, it becomes more clear how all of the characters come together in the main plot of the story, but midway through the novel I became disinterested because of confusion regarding the characters. All of the pieces to the puzzle come together very suddenly towards the end of the book, and the action returns and captivates the reader once again. Another aspect I enjoyed about this novel were the different views of the main character, Mitch Rapp. Throughout this novel you get to see him in a different light than the first novel. You can easily notice his hard, protective outer shell that he uses most of the time, but also his underlying emotional characteristics. These emotional characteristics are visible when Mitch spends time with his girlfriend, Greta, throughout the novel. It is visible that Rapp cares very much for his girlfriend, Greta: “The man would be livid when he found out his granddaughter had been places in harm’s way by one of Stansfield’s assassins, but Rapp knew he would have to risk seeing her just one more time. He would never forgive himself if he didn’t” (Flynn Chapter 48). As the novel progresses, Mitch tries to prove to himself that his is nothing like his bitter mentor, Stan Hurley, so his emotions are shown more in contrast to Stan’s emotionless
