Misunderstood Colloquialism

Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines recreation as “A means of refreshment or diversion”. It describes conservation as “official supervision of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management”. A true outdoorsman knows these words and their definitions by a commonly disregarded and misunderstood colloquialism “Pack it in, Pack it out”. Many people believe that this phrase translates into “If its mine, I pack it out”. What happens to that trash that is left by others? What happens to that potato chip bag from ten years ago, left to “decompose” by the rock? If no one is willing to pack out garbage that they see, whether it belongs to them or not, then do we leave said trash

After working in the French Creek Watershed I began to hike around the lakes and streams. This means by having cleaner streams I would personally benefit from aesthetically pleasing clean streams. Even on a short weekend walk behind the cemetery I would pick up any bottles or small objects I saw I felt an obligation to give back to the area I was able to enjoy. I also understood it was vital to keep the area clean so it would stay enjoyably and inhabited by the animals I always hope to see. It is shown that people will spend more time hiking in clean areas and bring an economic benefit to the area (Loomis et al., 2000).…

Why, then, is the wilderness worth preserving, since it cannot be mined or built on? Surprisingly, its isolation is quite valuable. The wilderness is an excellent indicator of the environment’s overall health, which is not easily gauged in populated, industrialized areas due to human influence. One cannot, for example, measure the air quality of the American west coast while standing in the middle of Los Angeles. As writer Gary Ferguson states in his article, “What the Wilderness Act has taught us”, the wilderness allows us to better understand how natural systems function properly (Ferguson 2).…

I knew that it was a place where all trash is put but I never imagined what it would look like. In the movie they mentioned, “Recycling is becoming popular,” I do agree with that in some states recycling is important and those who do not recycle can get a ticket. Curitiba and many other Global South cities are tackling a problem that has been prevalent for many years, municipal solid waste management. Many of these cities have attempted to replicate the centralized systems used in the U.S. or Japan, but have failed due to the differing needs of the Global South. Consequently, an alternative solution has come about, and it is scavenging. Scavenging provides economic, social and environmental benefits while continuing to be more cost efficient than other methods of waste disposal. This essay will seek to compare the new alternative structure of scavenging in the Global South to the concept of the Commons, where, as the name suggests, consists of a society where the people collectively own a vast range…

Conserving and managing natural resources and wastes are national priorities. From unplugging your television, to riding a bike to work, there are many ways in which we can sustainably manage natural resources and wastes. Natural resources are what makes modern life possible for us, and it may seem impossible for some to cut back because of how much more convenient it may be. Conserving and maybe even, “going a little prehistoric” will come in handy once we are using less, and preserving more. Like R. Castello once said, “You can’t save the environment, but you can preserve it.”…
