Mistrust Among African Americans

Decent Essays
There is medical mistrust among African Americans in the medical healthcare system. From the Antebellum era to the 1950s, the U.S. medical research has a long history of discriminating and exploiting African American community for a long period of time (Black Americans Don’t Have Trust in the Medical Healthcare System, 2017). Therefore, this indicates that African Americans are more likely to participate in dissections and medical examinations (Black Americans Don’t Have Trust in the Medical Healthcare System, 2017). Unequal Treatment Since the birth of this great country, ironically called the melting pot, the unequal treatment of different races, especially African Americans, has been the source of immense conflict and controversy. From blatant racism, to simple treatment of blacks when it comes to healthcare, inequality has run rampant throughout the history of the United States. The non-fiction book, The Other Wes Moore, by Wes Moore, and the article, “Racial Injustice Still Rife in Healthcare,” both focus on the discrepancies and hardships that African Americans endure throughout their lives.…

Generally, whites have better health statuses than racial/ethnic minorities. Why is this so? Certainly, there are a number of factors associated with this problem such as one’s socioeconomic status and social support, but one of the main reasons is mistrust and/or communication difficulties with one’s physician. A patient-physician non-concordance relationship impacts disparities in patient satisfaction and delivery of health care services due to trust and communication barriers. In fact, there are numerous studies that examine trust and communication between a patient and his/her doctor on two racial groups, namely, whites and another minority group (i.e. blacks).…

Many researchers have identified health disparities the goal is look at the the cyclical pattern that ultimately results in widened disparities in health care between minority groups and the majority and in continued discrimination of minority group( e.g., Buki, Borrayo, Feigal & Carrillo, 2004; Clegg, Li, Hankey, Chu, & Edwards,2002) . According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states there is inequality in the quality of care given. For example if a white person suffered from a cardiovascular disease and a person of color suffered from the same thing would they received the same treatment? With health disparities healthcare becomes bias because society tends to aid the white person first and better versus the person of color. The first definition of health disparity was found in September 1999, Director Harold Varmus that worked for the white house was charged with creating a…

Due to being an avid reader since the age of six, I have read a wide variety of books. The latest book I’ve finished, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, is among the top of my favorite book lists. While reading it, I came to the conclusion that in earlier times of medicine, there was quite a few Caucasian doctors who did not share their motives or the African American patients results from tests, whether the tests were actually needed or not. Many of the African American patients were very superstitious and thanks to their superstitions, they consequently did not trust their doctors one hundred percent. As earlier mentioned, the doctors weren’t always a hundred percent honest with their patients, Henrietta Lack’s…

Racial disparities are a major issue in healthcare affecting mostly minorities as studies have confirmed. Root causes have been identified but with little achievement in removing the root causes. People perceptions can impact how care if given or received when there is distrust in the system or biased decision base on fraudulent research that support a claim. ACO and outcome based treatment may try to fix the problem, however, until the root causes of racial disparities are addressed and fixed, there won't be a breakthrough in fixing the problem in healthcare.…

After reading the article, for this weeks post, I was very shocked by the racial divisions that are still occurring in our current health care system. Personally, I was dispirited by the statistics in the article that specifically regarded the poor health care that African-Americans are receiving in the United States. In the article, the author states that, "a growing body of research during the past few years indicates that one of the most glaring inequalities experienced by African-Americans is the disparity in health care that they receive” (Ornish, 2008). With such substantial research showing that African-Americans are receiving less aggressive medical care, are thought as less appropriate candidates for surgeries and have a much lower…

Racism and discrimination are being progressively implicated in racial and ethnic disparities within health care. Many believe that the inequalities associated with racism contribute to other factors including, safety and quality of care of ethnic minority groups. But racism and discrimination in healthcare do not solely occur from a provider to patient perspective- when health care providers initiate racism and discrimination practices to the patient. Racism and discrimination also often occurs from a patient to provider perspective- when the patient initiates racism or discrimination practices to the health care providers.…

This encounter is an example of racial concordance; the patient is the same race as his physician. Based on the results of the study, an encounter between a physician and an African American male would have a low rate of implicit race. In terms of race, the majority of Black American physicians do not prefer White Americans over Black Americans thus preventing a racially bias diagnosis for a patient (Sabin 2009). A study performed by the Society of General Internal Medicine, reflects this idea of unequal and bias diagnosis for patients. Implicit bias will occur in this situation due to the implication of the lack of compliance in African American males.…

There is a problem in healthcare where racial and ethnic disparities exist. Despite the abundance of healthcare facilities, technology and pharmacology and other aspects to which the U.S. is envied by others, something that should be accessible to everyone, is not. The quality and improvement of health care have been a long- standing and persistent issue of national discussions in the United States for years. This problem has negatively impacted African American women because there is a disparity of access and quality of care that they are receiving. Poor outcomes in health care, based on race or ethnic background exist in every level of the American health care system.…

A study conducted compared patients interactions with their health care provider and what they discovered was that blacks were significantly less likely to be referred for further testing than white patients (Dovidio et al., 2008). This in turn creates a stigma for minorities that health care providers do not care about their well-being and creates a sense of mistrust. It is important that nurses examine their own personal processes of care and think about ways they could improve their communication skills with their patients. The nurse has an important role in reducing disparities by opening communication with their patient’s and…

In this essay, I aim to guide you into the thinking that racialization in healthcare does exist and takes various forms through the following examples: structural violence and the racisms effect on health disparities, the manifestation of race as a social construct that limits out understanding of individual experiences, and how the human biology is static and too complex for race to define. As mentioned above, structural violence plays an important role in the perception of racism and racialization in the healthcare field. The term defines harms caused by social forces and its underlying causes include political and economic inequalities as well as racism, sexism, and homophobia (Koch, Lecture Notes). This is almost completely synonymous with the term health inequalities which refer to the disproportionate opportunities and resources in disadvantaged groups in society and the world at large (Erickson &Singer, pg.26).…
