In all my doings, I should strive to conduct myself as Mistress Bradstreet does. Surely it is by God’s hand that she has come upon such words, and I should wish to one day be as faithful and loving a wife as Mistress Bradstreet. Despite her inspired, eloquent poems, Mistress Bradstreet retains much of the modesty of a proper Puritan woman. Her beautiful poem, “The Author to Her Book” reveals that she though she is successful, and sharp of wit, she does not engage in that deadly sin, in which I have so disastrously partaken, Pride. In this, she is like my dear Mother, who would create rhymes to show us of the Old World from whence she came. Despite this, Mother would scarcely utter a word to the world, and could not match the wit of my Father, which contrasted their sacred marriage with that of Mistress Bradstreet, who was of one flesh and mind with her husband. I do firmly intend to be as such with my husband, when such a joyous day
