Mister Socrates Novel Analysis

Choi Jin-won directs and pens ‘’Mister Socrates’’, not a typical gangster film, but a movie that combines comedy, crime, drama and social commentary.

The main character is Ku Dong-Hyeok (Kim Rae-won), who is a high-school drop-out and low-level thug. He shows no respect for other people, he has no ethics and he just loves to beat people. One night, while he reports the accidental murder of a friend of his, by another friend, he gets kidnapped by a gang. He is kept in an abandoned school and, under the supervision of Bum-pyo (Kang Shin-il), he undergoes rigid training and study. The purpose of these is to become a police officer after passing the GED tests and the police recruitment tests. However, the hindmost purpose of all these is to become a homicide police officer and be the mole and the connecting link between the gang and the police.

‘’Mister Socrates’’ stands out from other gangster movies due to its allegories and symbolism. One of my personal favorite allegories is the use of Newton's three Laws of Motion. The law of inertia, the law of acceleration and the law of action-reaction that facilitate the symbolism of different phases and conditions of life.

In more detail, the one cycle represents the beliefs, ethics and morals that the police officers must have and the other cycle the corruption of the syndicate. The area of the overlap of the two cycles is no other than Ku Dong-hyeok. Now he has good and bad traits as he exists in the middle of police and gang. His new beliefs and morals are put to the ultimate test when he is asked to kill another police officer who was also a member of the gang and betrayed

While we have seen that Socrates is good at rejecting incorrect arguments, it is equally important to be able to identify correct ones. The Meno begins with Meno, a friend of Scorates, asking Socrates if virtue can be taught or is it an inborn quality that some posses from birth and others never will. Socrates and his friend then begin to perform an investigation into the nature and form of virtue. When they arrive at the question of how one may know and recognize virtue when it is found, despite not having knowledge of what it is beforehand Meno’s Paradox arises. While both Meno and Scorates agree that virtue is something beneficial within the soul, they struggle to answer how it is one comes to acquire virtue in the first place, whether…

The Man with a Movie Camera, a 1929 silent film by Dziga Vertov, illustrates the typical life of an average citizen in the city. Through its visual images, without a plot, Vertov allows the audience to make their own interpretations of the events in order to construct an overall meaning of the film. Vertov uses editing, specifically rhythm and continuity, along with cinematography, to convey the theme that life has two sides, birth and death, marriage and divorce, and lastly the young and old. Collectively, they are interconnected and give the meaning of life as it is which as a result, contributes to the meaning of the film. Vertov used editing to show that there are two sides of life.…

Films often portray the collective conscience of society. This perspective lends Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) a resonating voice in the film genre. By utilizing comedy, one of the most powerful tools in fiction, he created an exceptionally savage film. Kubrick’s political satire is a landmark film and one of the most significant pieces concerning the cold war. The film’s satirical spirit is every bit as caustic now as it was over fifty years ago.…

The creative editing, ingenious non-speaking scenes, unceasing black humors and hidden social criticism of the film Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance directed by Park Chan-wook are memorable and thought provoking. For example, it is ironic that the moan of pain from the sick sister and the groan of happy expression from upstairs sounds no big different. No wonder the four young neighbors would misunderstand. Enjoyment is separated from suffering only by a wall. When Ryu enjoys the tasty of noodles, he is unable to notice his sister’s pain because of his deafness even in a same space.…

The goal of a definition, for Socrates, is to understand a concept in a way it cannot be refuted. This means the answer must be clear in what the concept is and what it is not. Many times a concept goes undefined in Plato’s Socratic works due to the particularity of Socrates’ method. What a concept truly is is never accurately defined to Socrates’ liking, but what it is not is very clear. Therefore it can be argued that goal of a true Socratic definition is not finding out what a concept is, but what it is not.…

This essay will argue about two Kung Fu based films ‘Way of the Dragon’ and ‘Enter the Dragon’ each one representing someone from a third world country being the hero, as opposed to always having a white man being the only hero. While also assessing the political significance of this group of films, how each of these types of films had an influence on society and the film industry. The film mentioned below will focus on the actor Bruce Lee, who is a well-known martial arts expert and is known for his movies based on his skill set.…

Socrates believed that cities have three attributes. He goes on to explain that since the attributes of a city come from the people living within, the soul must also be split into three attributes. Socrates attempts to break down the soul into three different categories; the part of the soul that learns or thinks (rational), the part of the soul that desires pleasure, and the part of the soul that is spirit.…
