At my practicum, there are several opportunities for a counselor to make a mistake. However, the mistakes can be easily corrected, and most of the time the person on the other end of the phone or computer will not be phased by a slip up. The forgiveness of the mess up does not make it okay, because as social workers we should strive to always provide the best services for our clients. I have learned that I can never assume things about a person or situation. I also learned that I should do research on my clients background and try to gain understanding about what goes on in their lives and why they react the way they do. One major mistake the social worker made was over stepping her professional boundaries. This in particular showed me that I have to be always mindful of agency policy, and not get too attached to a client. Faith Harper’s story gave great insight into social work practice, and I will attempt to go above and beyond to help all women in Faith’s…

The history of social welfare in Canada has shaped the social work profession over the past century. York university recognizes that to make progress moving forward, one must analyze the past and make changes accordingly. Acknowledging the historical and cultural context of certain events is one of the key components of York University’s dominant framework of critical practice. Historically speaking, many events occurred that have been influential in the growth of Canadian social work. The Great Depression in the 1930’s was a burdensome time for most Canadians, but it led to the formation of social programs that were government funded, which provided an increased need for social workers to facilitate them (Hick & Stokes, 2017, p. 45).…

Challenges Interning at Vital Connections, my biggest challenge will be developing a new supervisor/intern relationship with my new field supervisor. This being that my current supervisor is planning to begin her new job before the fall semester begins. I think this will be a challenge because we have grown close to one another as the months have passed by throughout the semester. Also, I believe learning more about the agency will be a challenge because of the fact that my field supervisor knows a lot about the agency; being that she has been stationed here for about two years.…

Completing my Master’s in Counseling will help me learn many of the skills I still need to become an effective counselor. One area that I still need to strengthen is learning to create a therapeutic relationship that is open and trusting while still maintaining strong professional boundaries. Learning to create this type of professional framework me avoid pitfalls such as over-empathizing or internalizing the difficult emotional experiences described by clients. During my internship at the Onslow Women’s Center, I made a point of communicating with other staff members and interns to find a healthy balance between connecting with clients and maintaining professional distance. I also made an effort to practice self-care so that I maintained my…

In the field of social work, we are faced with ethical dilemmas, more often than not. These dilemmas can come from conflicts with certain social work ethics and standards such as the right to self-determination, dual relationships, or confidentiality. A social worker can even face an ethical dilemma from a conflict of morals and values that they may have with their client. I will be examining an ethical dilemma that intersects both morals and values and confidentiality. Let’s say for example a social worker has an 18 year old client who is pregnant, still living with their parents and seeking an abortion.…

Carers can be quite guarded as talking about such personal and sensitive details can be extremely hard, yet the assessment process requires this information to form effective solutions to problems. Respectful practice of social workers can make all the difference in obtaining this data as individuals who are listened to more likely to feel valued and open up to share their thoughts, feeling and wishes. Social workers who appear non-judgemental and congruent are also expected to establish a rapport built upon trust as they will identify with the carer. Likewise, carers will probably realise the social worker is genuinely interested in helping and thus be willing to engage if the social worker is empathetic (Maclean and Harrison, 2011).…
